Rs40m funds for sports facilities in Rawalpindi

Rawalpindi: The Punjab government has allocated funds worth Rs40 million for construction of hockey ground, cricket ground and football ground and work on these projects have been initiated.

Talking to this correspondent, PML-N leader and MNA Malik Shakil Awan said that after implementing measures on improvement and promotion of health, education sectors and traffic schemes, the Punjab government is now laying emphasis on constructing sports grounds for the players living in Rawalpindi so that they could utilise them for practicing purposes.

He said recently a delegation of sports players of National level held meeting with him and stressed the need of sports grounds in Rawalpindi enabling them to do practice for big events and selection purposes in national teams.

In view of their demand and seeing great enthusiasm in them, he discussed the matter with the Punjab Chief Minister Mian Shahbaz Sharif who announced allocation of funds of Rs40 million for promotion of sports activities in Rawalpindi.

Shakeel Awan said that the funds have been released and work on the projects ahs begun. Giving details, the PML-N leader said that under the funds, the hockey and football ground of Gordon College would be renovated and revamped. At present the condition of both football and hockey ground in Gordon College is poor. Similarly, according to the plan, hockey and football ground would be developed in Christian High School near Bara Bazaar. Moreover, a cricket ground would be established in Denny’s High School and four nets would be installed for practice by the national team players living in Rawalpindi and its adjacent areas. The cricket ground would also consist four good quality wickets.

The grounds including hockey, cricket and football grounds could be utilised both by students of the institution and national team players.

Shakeel Awan said that the projects would be completed in January this year and work on them is being carried out round the clock. He said that it was the long-standing demand of the students, and team players for developing playgrounds like cricket, hockey and football.
