Streaming Live Gameplay

We see this all the time now. People streaming live footage of video games. It's on justin.tv, twitch.tv and upstream, but how do you go about streaming video games in the first place? This was the question that I wanted an answer to that took me a while to get. You'd think the knowledge would be easy to find, but it wasn't so. There are multiple hardware items and a few kinds of software you'll need to be able to stream your video games live.

Lets start with the hardware since that comes first. You will need an extra composite cable, 3 rca splitters and a capture card. You can do this with component cables as well, but you'll need a capture device that will have that kind of connection. Same goes with HDMI. When you have the capture device you plug the 3 splitters into the tv and on one side have the consoles composite input and then put the other composite cable on the other open slots in the splitters. Once that is done you connect the other end of this composite cable to your capture device. You are now done with setting up the hardware.

Now for the software. You will need capture software that displays a preview screen before recording your gamely footage, screen capture software for your computer screen (depending on which programs you use) and finally the streaming software. If you use a windows computer then you may want to try out something called AmaRecTV if your capture device didn't come with capture software. You will also need something called XSplit. This software comes with like an all in one kind of deal. It captures a specific area of the screen (You'll want to set this area to wherever your preview screen is at) and then all you have to do is change the settings such as audio and video for streaming. Log in to your account and you're done.

Now for the Mac part of it. You will also need capture software for it and I don't know if AmaRecTV works with that or not so if your device didn't come with capture software then you'll have to look around for it. As for getting the stream you will want to use CamTwist for capturing the preview area and FMLE (Flash Media Live Encoder) for the streaming part of it. If you sign in to your justin.tv or twitch.tv account you can go get an xml file that will enable your stream. The link is twitch.tv/broadcast. The config file in the FMLE section is what you need. Now that you downloaded the xml file you'll just have to go to file and then "open profile". Select your xml file and then your stream is set. I recommend making some changes to your stream though. Change the resolution and audio for what your computer can handle.

You are now live. It's pretty simple to stream live once you have everything. Just make sure that you don't have anything in the way of the preview screen. All that is needed now is an audience, perhaps streaming some popular video games would do the trick.
