The Positives and Negatives of Buying a New Vehicle

Author: Amy Farley

You face a number of big decisions through the process of getting a new vehicle. One of the first you'll have to make is whether you'd rather buy a new vehicle or a used vehicle. Both have their advantages and both have their disadvantages, but it's not impossible to know which is the best option for you!
Here, we've assembled all the information you need about buying a new vehicle, both positive and negative. We hope this information will help you begin the process of making your final decision!
  • New cars just cost more. You can often save money by buying used, which is why so many people do. If you want to buy new, you'll have to be prepared to pay a higher price.
  • More selection with new vehicles. If you want to customize the car you want, buying new may be your only option. When you buy used, you're limited to what's on the lot. If you buy new, you can order a vehicle exactly to your specifications, or at least browse a broader selection of features.
  • Speaking of features… New vehicles will have more advanced and modern features. This may be particularly important to you if you're choosing a vehicle for its safety features. Used vehicles just aren't going to have the latest technology.
  • Less worry about maintenance and repair. As vehicles age, they naturally need more attention. When you buy new, you may have some time before you have to start spending money on costly repairs. This is especially true as a warranty will cover a new vehicle for your initial period of ownership. That being said, many Certified Used programs offer extensive warranties, as well.
  • Get incentives on new vehicles. Many dealership offer special sales, deals or incentives on new vehicles. If you want to take advantage of these benefits, you'll have to buy new. In many cases, however, they provide enough of a discount or off-set the cost enough to make buying new worth it.
Buying a car doesn't have to be hard! If you study all the information and make some decisions before you begin, the process can be streamlined and easy.
