MCITP Certification - Your Questions Answered

What Is The MCITP Certification?
MCITP stands for Microsoft Certified Information Technology Professional. It's a selection of Microsoft certifications offered for a number of Microsoft technologies, and is a level on top of the MCTS on their certification hierarchy.
A lot of them include exams taken at the MCTS level and develop the knowledge gained at that level as well.

What Are The MCITP Requirements?

What to Do If Your Recruiting Software Freezes

When you use any kind of software on any computer system, there is a chance that it will stop responding for no reason that you can discern. This is known as freezing, and it even happens with recruiting software. This can be rather frustrating because it prevents you from working, but the positive side of things is that it is usually not very hard to fix the problem. If you just use the tips listed below, you should be able to have your software back up and running in just a matter of minutes.

The first thing to do is to determine if the recruiting software has frozen or if your entire computer has stopped working. Try opening some other programs. At the very least, try minimizing the window that you are using and then bring it back up again. If the window closed and opened, or if the other programs opened in the usual manner, the issue is with the software. If nothing would work at all, the issue is with your computer. Another test is just to try moving the mouse. If your whole machine has stopped working, the cursor will probably not move around on the screen.

If you have determined that the recruiting software is malfunctioning, try forcing the program to quit. There are a number of different ways to do this, depending on your software and the type of computer that you are using. On a Mac, you may just be able to right click on the related icon on the toolbar. You can then choose the option that is listed as "Force Quit." On a PC, you need to bring up the task manager. Once it is open, you can pick any of the programs that are running and force them to quit from that window. Once the software shuts down, start it back up and it should run correctly, though some data could be lost in the process.

If the recruiting software is not the problem and the computer has frozen, you may not have much choice but to hold down the power button until the machine shuts off. You should then wait for 30 seconds to a minute and start it up again. If the software had an auto-save feature, your data may be retained even through this process. If not, you will have to start up again at the last save point.

The Elements of Interview Success – Tip 2: Effective Interview Presentation

Your hard work has finally paid off and you've landed an interview for a great role. You already know how to dress for success (link to part 1 in series), but what can you expect at interview? In part 2 of this series, we'll brief you on three interview types and offer our top tips to help you prepare.

Type #1: Tackling telephone interviews
When you meet someone in person, you're relying on personality, body language, and conversation to make a good impression. In a telephone interview, the only thing your interviewer has to assess you on is what you say. A lot can be lost in translation when you're speaking over the phone; in our survey of 800 recruitment and HR professionals 95% of respondents said that candidates come across differently over the phone compared to in-person meetings.

A telephone conversation is often a way for recruiters or employers to pre-screen a group of candidates with similar qualifications before bringing them in for a face-to-face meeting. By not taking the interview seriously, you could cut yourself out of the running before you hang up the phone.

Tips for success:
  • Prep with the same rigor as you would an in-person meeting
  • Make sure your environment is free of noise so you sound professional and calm
  • Use a landline instead of a cell phone if possible, to avoid reception problems
  • Give the potential employer your undivided attention
  • Make sure you're listening just as much as you're talking
  • Be as polite and professional as you would be in real life; don't use any slang, and avoid using over-familiar terms such as ‘mate' or ‘love'.
Type #2: Competency-based interviews
If you've ever been asked a question that started with: "Tell me about a time when you…", then chances are you've already experience this type.
Competency-based questions are asked on the premise that your performance in the job you're going for can be predicted by your behaviour in past roles. It's one of the most popular interview types, and requires significant preparation. Research the company and analyse the employer's needs when formulating your best possible answers.
Tips for success:
  • Re-read the job description – can you prove your experience with each responsibility and task listed?
  • Go over your CV once more, and make sure you can recall real-life examples that will support the skills required for the role
  • With each response, explain: the details of the situation, the actions you took, and the impact you made on the business
  • Avoid using theoretical scenarios or using ‘we', as this potential employer is interested in you, not your former team
  • If you find a question difficult, allow yourself the time to think about it before you respond
  • Have a list of things to ask prepared for the end; this will show your passion and excitement for the position.
Type #3: Preparing for panel interviews
Above any other type, the key to a successful panel interview is preparation. There can be several people on the panel; either led by a chair who might ask all the questions, or multiple people asking questions around different subjects.
Tips for success:
  • Research your interviewers to learn more about their background. Do you have any common connections on Linkedin? What's their work history like? Do you have any commonalities? This will help you develop a relationship with them and allow you to tailor your answers to them
  • Engage the entire panel. Make eye contact with the questioner, and then move across the panel
  • Don't waffle; make sure you get to the point.
Remember that the point of an interview is to sell yourself, so keep this in mind when responding to any questions that they might throw at you.

Great Ways to Improve Your Telephone Sales Skills

Go ahead, pick up the phone, and start selling. Not just yet. You wouldn't go onto a baseball field and just start pitching. Nor should you do this when you start selling. First, you've got to learn some basic skills. Here are some techniques.

Know your product. Do some research and learn all about what you are selling. Learn the features and benefits of this item. Know the price structure. Study your competition and learn what they are offering compared to your product and their prices. Your top sales pros always know their product inside out. You can't answer objections unless you can tell the customer the benefits of your product and how it will make their lives better.

Practice, practice and practice some more. Once you know your product, practice your sales skills. Record your voice and listen for its tone and pitch. The tape lets you know how well you modulated your voice to "match" that of the customer. Rehearse your presentation with a partner, one person doing the telephone message and the other listening, and making objections. The objections will help you to think quicker and will identify if you've been able to recapture command of the sale with the added benefits of your product. It will help you not to take "no" for an answer and keep the sale alive.

Listen to the give and take during the conversation. How much talking do you do? Do you listen to your customers and jot down what their needs are? What percentage of time do you spend talking versus the customer? Are you asking questions to find out exactly what the customer needs and wants?

For beginners, you may need a script that moves you through each of these steps. The script will give you the introduction. Don't' waste time. Get to the point. It will help you to move to the "benefits" of your product. Remember that the buyer must see a need and want to buy. As you gain experience, you will be able to make instant adjustments in your presentation and bring them in synch with your customer's needs. This is a judgment call and you must decide when to move forward to the close.

The close. Your success in telephone sales depends on your closing ratio. It's not how many calls you make, its how many you close. Those are the numbers that go on your performance records each day. And of course they determine how much commission you will make. You must bring the customer to the point of close with words like, "let's proceed. I'll need your credit card information. Let me know when you are ready." Here is the most important cardinal rule of the close. Once you ask for credit card information, "do not speak." The first person who speaks loses. The silence may shake you to your core. But you must let the customer tell you, "OK, here's my card number." Now go through the final steps of collecting credit card information and confirmation. Then be sure to thank the customer. You may even want to ask for referrals.

Follow up. You can send a written thank you via email. Remember that the customer wants something in writing to confirm the purchase. This process helps to cement the sale. The customer can have "buyer's remorse" and want to cancel the sale. The written confirmation fixes the sale in the customer's mind and helps eliminate this feeling.

Regardless of ability and experience, most people wish they could accomplish more in doing whatever matters most to them. The struggling golfer dreams of breaking 100, a score that would be a nightmare for a good golfer. The solid B student fondly contemplates the satisfaction that a single A would bring.

Top performers have different kinds of goals. They may seek to pass their best prior accomplishment on every attempt. Their eyes might even be fixed on surpassing all others, feeling intense disquiet until they do.
Consequently, while such goals might lead to high performance being achieved more often, high performers may also be more frustrated -- a source of increased determination that can contribute to gaining greater mastery.

Ironically, people with more modest dreams often enjoy pursuing and accomplishing their achievements more than top performers do.

Wouldn't it be nice if almost everyone could achieve top results ... but without the pain of frustration? I believe that such a happy result is often available to those who follow poet Robert Frost's advice and take the road less traveled. Let me explain what I mean.

When I look around, it's easy to find performances where the current best isn't actually very good compared to what's needed. Let's look at an example drawn from medical diagnostics.

Colon cancer is a leading cause of death. Today's most reliable test for this disease is a visual inspection called a colonoscopy. In the United States the test usually costs over $1,000. While this test is primarily ordered for those with the highest risk of colon cancer, only a very small percentage of tests reveal cancer.

Surely someone will eventually find a more effective, lower-cost way to test. Rather than try for more productivity from visual colon inspections, the breakthrough test will probably take a totally different tack, such as by swallowing a tiny, low-cost sensor that monitors many factors throughout the colon and wirelessly transmits the results.

In support of my argument, consider that many medical breakthroughs have come from taking quite different approaches including:
-- penicillin's disease-fighting capability being discovered and developed after some mold accidentally contaminated a petri dish and dissolved all the bacteria near it
-- stomach ulcer biopsies frequently revealing bacterial infections, eventually leading to successfully treating many such ulcers with antibiotics
-- studies of youngsters with certain kinds of broken bones showing that casts contributed to poorer healing, leading to cast-free treatments for some breaks
You may be thinking that these are all older examples, taken from times when medical science wasn't as advanced as today. From that observation, you might conclude that such opportunities don't still exist.
What are today's opportunities to take the road less traveled?
Just considering the medical field, I believe that the opportunities to successfully innovate from under-examined areas are outstanding. Let me share an example drawn from the work of John Jaquish, Ph.D., a recent graduate of Rushmore University who has developed patented methods for increasing bone density without medicine.

Here's some background. About 15 percent of people will have osteoporosis at some point in their lives, a condition that's associated with more frequent bone fractures, poor healing, and health complications from extended immobility. In extreme cases premature death can occur.
Osteoporosis and low bone density have often been treated with bisph
osphonate medications, which seek to slow or stop the natural process of dissolving bone tissue. Since bone cells refresh on a six-year cycle, this intervention falters in time. In addition, these medicines cause severe side effects in some patients.
Because of these problems Dr. Jaquish became interested in how to create a better outcome for those with low bone density than what medications provide. While reviewing medical research that was almost a century old, he noted that physical impact was how younger people increased their bone density, a not-surprising finding given their generally higher activity levels.

During such impacts a physical load slightly distorts the bone matrix. After the load is released, the bone springs back to its original state. Impact helps because nerves monitor the stress on bones caused by muscle action, and any substantial increase sends signals to build more bone. Irritation from repeated shifting enables the bone to absorb more minerals, decreasing porosity.

Is this just one person's arbitrary view of some old research? No, the U.S. Surgeon General's report dated October 14, 2004 cited impact as the greatest way to increase or maintain bone mass density.

After understanding this information many people would have been satisfied to write papers and make speeches about the value of increased exercise for those at greater risk for broken bones and complications. Dr. Jaquish had a different goal in mind: enable older people to safely absorb more physical impact than they may have experienced when they were young.

After carefully examining the body's capabilities, he designed equipment that individuals safely adjust to receive bone-density-building impact. Consider how effectively this works: While using his patented bioDensity (tm) equipment, women between the ages of 80 and 99 have safely absorbed leg-press loads of over 600 pounds.

As a result of safely increasing impact, your bones can grow stronger while you grow older. Can you imagine the joy that Dr. Jaquish experienced as he developed such solutions? There was certainly no room for frustration. It was a bit like trying to break 100 in golf and quickly finding that you could score below par.
What are the lessons for you getting to be the best?

1. Look for problems where today's best solutions (such as colonoscopies to screen for colon cancer) aren't highly efficient compared to their costs. Think of this search as being like setting a goal of breaking 100 in golf.
2. Explore all the logical alternative solutions that few have focused on.
3. Pay special attention to methods that work well with the best natural processes and human nature.
4. Work with open-minded experts to effectively apply the best apparent method.
5. Share the good news about your discoveries.
