Limit swelling while wearing a cast

It’s natural for a broken limb to swell just after the injury. If the limb is in a cast, this can make the cast feel snug near the injury, causing discomfort and possible pain.

The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons offers these suggestions to help ease swelling beneath a cast:

Today’s Health Tips

* Rest the limb on a pillow, especially within the first 72 hours, so it is raised higher than your heart. This will encourage fluids to drain from the injury.

* Gently and frequently move your fingers or toes on the injured limb. This will help prevent stiffness.

* Place a soft ice pack around the cast.
