PML-F rejects PPP’s proposal for modifying SPLGA

Karachi

The Pakistan Muslim League Functional PML-F has rejected the Pakistan People’s Party’s proposal of introducing amendments in the controversial Sindh People’s Local Government Act-2012 (SPLGA).

The PPP made an offer to bring modifications in the SPLGA-2012 in its bid to reconcile with its former coalition allies, particularly PML F, which had quit the government over the issue along with National People’s Party and Pakistan Muslim League-Q.

Addressing a press conference at his residence on Wednesday, General Secretary PML-F Imtiaz Ahmed Sheikh expressed his astonishment as to what factor made the PPP to review its previous decision of approving the controversial local government law.

Expressing concern over the PPP’s sudden U-turn, he said that PPP has woken up from a deep slumber after its major ally Muttahida Qaumi Movement joined hands with the Tehreek-e-Minhaj-ul-Quran leader Allam Tahir-ul-Qadri to bring revolution in the country, “and now they (PPP) want to befool their former allies to gain political mileage”.

He declared that the PML-F would not withdraw its earlier decision of protesting against the law until this black law was completely repealed and not merely introducing some amendments.

Imtiaz Sheikh said that the government needs to immediately annul this law or face its defeat in the coming elections, as the people of Sindh have not accepted this controversial law that has drastically declined popularity graph of PPP in the province.

He said that the PML-F would not compromise on the issues of Sindh and alleged that the PPP has caused great harm to the province by laying down the foundation of carving out a new province in Sindh.

Accusing PPP of indulging in pre-poll rigging, he said it has started promoting and transferring its favourites and awarding tenders as part of the bribe to win the coming election through manipulated means.

Criticising local government minister Agha Siraj Durrani, the PML-F leader said that he (Durrani) had finally realised that SPLGA had caused great damage to the PPP’s popularity in the province and thus issuing condemnation statements against it.

He advised the chief minister and the Sindh cabinet to wake up before it gets too late and go through the law clause by clause to realise its negative notions, adding, “The U-turn by the government is an endorsement of Pir Pagara’s stand against this black law as well as a victory of PML F”.

Imtiaz Sheikh demanded from the government to immediately announce interim set-up with the consensus of all political parties in order to hold free and fair elections.

Meanwhile, a delegation of Aurat Foundation called on Imtiaz Ahmed Sheikh and Mehtab Rashdi and suggested to include women empowerment in their party manifesto.

Welcoming their recommendations, Ms Rashdi said that Pagara firmly believes in the empowerment of women in social, economic and education sectors. She assured them of including their agenda in the PML-F manifesto.
