There was more sectarian violence in the city on Monday as two people belonging to the Shia community were among the five people murdered in various incidents.
Ali Raza Naqvi, a 35-year-old bank employee, suffered bullet wounds when two armed motorcyclists sprayed him with bullets while he was riding his own bike near the Al-Mustafa Welfare Hospital in Gulshan-e-Iqbal’s 13-D
The injured was rushed to the hospital in a critical condition, but died during treatment.
The body was later taken to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital for legal formalities.
A medico-legal officer (MLO) at the hospital said that the victim was shot more than six times in the upper body. Later, the Gulshan-e-Iqbal police reached the spot and found the empty casing of 9MM bullets from the spot.
According to the police, Naqvi was a cashier at a private bank and a member of the Shia Community.
They confirmed that he was murdered in a sectarian attack, adding that the victim was a resident of the Buffer Zone.
Excise official killed
Murtuza Alwani, also 35-years-of-age, was sprayed with bullets by two gunmen on a motorcycle while he was driving his official near Bara Board situated in the Pak Colony police jurisdiction.
Locals rushed to the aid of the victim, but found his body lying in a pool of blood. They called rescue teams, who took the corpse to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital for a postmortem.
The police reached the crime scene 20 minutes after the attack and seized the empty shells of 9MM bullets from the spot.
An MLO at the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital said the victim suffered seven bullet wounds to the upper body.
According to the police, Alwani was an employee of the finance department and was posted in the excise and taxation department. They added that he belonged to the Shia community and was murdered in a targeted attack. The law enforcers also said that the victim was a resident of the Soldier Bazar area.
Man shot dead
Arif, 35, was shot dead by unidentified assailants on a motorcycle as he was driving his chicken van near the Northern Bypass in the Sohrab Goth police limits.
The body was taken to the Abbasi Shaheed by rescue teams. SHO Sohrab Goth Fasi Zaman told The News that the deceased was a van driver and had been killed in a targeted incident.
Bodies found
The bullet-riddled body of an unidentified man in his mid-forties was found in a gunny bag near the Tori Bangash Colony in Orangi Town’s Sector 11-1/2.
The Iqbal Market police reached the spot after being informed about the body by locals and opened the bag. The law enforcers discovered that the victim’s hand and legs had been tied with a piece of rope. His mouth was also stuffed with some cloth.
A medico-legal officer of the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital said that the body showed signs of torture and the victim had been shot twice.
Meanwhile, another bullet-riddled body of an unidentified man in his mid-thirties was found in Chanaser Goth of the Mehmoodabad police limits.
A mobile unit of the police station reached the spot and shifted the corpse to the JPMC for an autopsy.
According to the police, the deceased was a drug addict and used to wash cars in the area. Police suspected that he was killed by a drug peddler.
ASWJ activist dies
Meanwhile Maulana Shaukat, 40, who suffered bullet wounds on December 31, died at the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital.
According to the police, the deceased was injured in an armed attack in North Karachi’s Sector 5-E in the Bilal Colony police jurisdiction.
Police also said Shaukat lived in Surjani Town and was a worker of Ahle Sunnat Wal Jamat (ASWJ) and killed in a targeted incident.
