TTP leader Aslam Farooqi insists he hasn’t surrendered

HANGU: Akhundzada Aslam Farooqi, member of the central shura of the Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), has refuted media reports that he has surrendered to the government and stopped fighting the security forces in Orakzai Agency.

In a phone call from an unknown location to The News on Saturday, he said there was no truth in the reports by a private TV channel that he gave himself to the security forces in Orakzai Agency on Friday. “I would continue waging jehad until the enforcement of Shariah in Pakistan and unless our rulers stopped siding with the infidels,” he declared.

Before Aslam Farooqi came on the line, a TTP commander Moeenuddin belonging to the Tariq Afridi group also spoke to The News and refuted media reports that Akhundzada Aslam Farooqi had surrendered to the authorities.

Earlier, a private TV channel reported that Aslam Farooqi surrendered on Friday following the arrest of his father-in-law and brother-in-law by the government. It was felt these arrests had forced Aslam Farooqi to give up fighting.

Aslam Farooqi is one of the oldest members of the TTP. He was among its founders along with Baitullah Mahsud. He led the militants in Orakzai Agency even before the TTP was founded by Baitullah Mahsud in December 2007. He had led a campaign in Orakzai Agency against social evils such as the sale and trafficking of drugs before ordering the people not to watch television or play music. He and his supporters also hosted and backed Hakimullah Mahsud in Orakzai Agency before the latter became the TTP head when Baitullah Mahsud was killed in a US drone strike.
