PESHAWAR: With the approach of the weekend, residents of the Shami Road residential colony are alerted and concerned as hundreds of guests come to the Pakistan Air Force Golf Club located in the area to attend weddings.
Traffic jams are frequent as roads are blocked by scores of vehicles parked by guests attending the weddings at the PAF Golf Club, which is turned into a festive place for marriages. There are also security concerns as it is well nigh impossible to check every vehicle and guest.
Weddings also take place at the golf course on other days of the week, but Saturdays and Sundays are a crowded affair as families prefer to celebrate marriages on the weekend. Residents were so much disturbed by the weddings taking place at the PAF Golf Club that some of them started a signature campaign to bring the practice to a halt. They complained about the rush of people and vehicles on the roads leading to the PAF Golf Club and the blaring of the music from loudspeakers late into the night during the weddings. However, the authorities remain unmoved and the weddings continue at the club meant for golf rather than solemnizing marriage, playing music and cooking and eating mass dinners.
“By now many of us remember the Pashto and Urdu songs that we are forced to listen to during these weddings in our backyard. There were no cockroaches in our locality but now they are in abundance due to the lack of cleanliness as the leftover food served at weddings attracts insects, crows and birds,” narrated businessman Ghulam Sarwar Mohmand who lives in a house close to the PAF Golf Club.
He said residents, particularly patients and students were all suffering due to the frequent weddings, closure of roads and playing of music at the golf club.
One reason the PAF Golf Club is attracting families looking for a venue to celebrate weddings and hold walima is the relatively low fee for using the place. It is stated to be Rs40,000 and one gets to use a prestigious place and a famous address to make the marriage memorable. However, the club is located in a residential area of bungalows owned by wealthy families and they are made to suffer when hundreds of guests converge on the place, the roads are blocked by vehicles and loud music is played.
The parking space inside the club isn’t big enough to accommodate all the cars and vehicles and these have to be parked outside on the roads and in the streets. Guests have to walk some distance to reach the club’s premises where the weddings take place.
The Pakistan Army-run Peshawar Garrison Club too is used for weddings, but a portion of the club’s premises has been separated with its own entrance for the purpose. The surrounding area and roads too are spacious and there is enough space outside on the road for car parking.
Sources said the commercial activities were being carried out at the PAF Golf Club in violation of the lease. Efforts were made to reach Group Captain Shahzad, secretary of the club, to seek his comments on the issue but he didn’t respond to phone calls.
