MS orders inquiry as wrong surgery performed on one-year-old child at BBH

Rawalpindi

The administration of Benazir Bhutto Hospital, on Saturday, decided to investigate the case of allegedly a wrong procedure performed on a one-year old child patient on Friday as the surgeon made an incision on the arm of the child that did not require surgery.

According to details, Head of Orthopaedic Department at BBH Dr. Nayyar Qayyum allegedly made a cut on the arm of one-year old Asghar that was not fractured instead of operating the fractured arm. However, upon noticing the mistake, the surgeon took the family of the child into confidence and the surgery was postponed on Friday. Later, the surgery of the fractured arm was performed on Saturday.

“I have marked an inquiry into the case,” said Medical Superintendent at BBH Dr. Asif Qadir Mir while talking to ‘The News’ on Saturday. He added that he has directed Additional Medical Superintendent (Administration) at BBH Dr. Bashir Malik to investigate the matter and submit findings to his office.

Dr. Nayyar, when contacted by ‘The News’ on Saturday, said that both the arms of the child were fractured and he operated one arm on Friday while the other on Saturday. It is, however, worth mentioning here that the arm had a cut on Friday did not have plaster of Paris (POP). Dr. Nayyar is serving as Associate Professor of Orthopaedics at Rawalpindi Medical College.

“I performed surgical procedure on one fractured arm of the child on Friday while operated second fractured arm on Saturday,” said Dr. Nayyar. He added that the child patient would be discharged from the hospital on Saturday evening.

The father of the child, when contacted on Saturday, said that his boy did not receive any erroneous procedure. A number of health officials informed ‘The News’ that the patient’s family has already been taken into confidence by the hospital administration and they are hesitant to talk on the subject.

“The arm that bore cut on Friday had some problem,” said father of the child when asked by ‘The News’ whether his child had fractures in both arms. Saying hesitantly that the arm operated on Friday was not fractured, he dropped the call and later did not make himself available to ‘The News’. He even did not tell his name to ‘The News’, might be because of some fear.

A health expert expressed to ‘The News’ that the matter relates to all patients seeking treatment at the public sector hospitals and not a matter of concern for the father of the child only who did not want to speak truth.

A renowned health official in town said that similar cases should be investigated thoroughly for the sake of health of general public. “Majority of patients visiting public sector hospitals belong to low and low middle class who did not afford treatment at private set-ups. Healthcare providers should take care of them for the sake of humanity,” he said.

Dr. Bashir Malik, when contacted by ‘The News’ on Saturday said that he has informed the hospital MS that he could not conduct inquiry into a case in which an RMC Professor is involved instead he would collect facts into the case and submit those to the MS office. “I have asked orthopaedics department of the hospital to provide history of the case to my office,” said the AMS.

Three hours later, when the AMS was contacted again, he said that he has not received file (history) of one-year old patient so far. “I would submit findings of the case to the MS office on Monday,” said Dr. Bashir.
