A senior member of Qureshi community was targeted in the New Karachi police limits on Sunday night.
According to SDPO Chaudhry Mohammed Akhtar of New Karachi Division, Mairaj Qureshi, 45, was returning to his house in Sector-11D of New Karachi after attending a Haleem party at his friend’s residence situated two lanes away in the same area. When his car reached near the New Karachi Power House, two armed men, riding a motorcycle, came across his vehicle and opened fire at him.
He was rushed to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital (ASH) where he breathed his last. Qureshi received two bullet wounds on his head that became the cause of his death. The police seized empty casings of 9mm pistol from the scene for forensic test.
Describing his murder as part of target killing, police said that Miraj Qureshi also used to hear the problems of his community members and he had resolved several disputes by passing judgments. Further investigation was underway.
Constable murdered
Late on Sunday night, armed motorcyclists shot and killed Police Constable (PC) Saqib Zuberi when he was on duty near a money changer in the in Aziz Bhatti area.
The gunmen pulled up to the scene and shot the constable multiple times in the back and the upper torso before fleeing. The victim was moved to the PNS Shifa Hospital, where he died during treatment.
Investigators said the policeman’s murder was a targeted attack and a 9mm pistol was used in the offence. Zuberi was posted in the Special Motorcycle Patrolling Squad of the East Range.
Robber killed
Meanwhile, a suspected robber identified as Kamran was killed in an encounter in the Gulistan-e-Jauhar area.
Station House Officer (SHO) Asif Rauf of the Gulistan-ie-Jauhar police station said that a team was conducting checking near the Kamran Chowrangi and as they moved towards main University Road, the cops signaled the suspect to stop.
However, instead of stopping, Kamran fired at the law enforcers. The police retaliated and the alleged bandit was shot in the leg. He continued to try and escape and the loss of blood caused his condition to deteriorate. The suspect was finally apprehended near the Staff Gate of the Karachi University.
He was moved to the Darul Sehat Hospital, where he died during treatment. the suspect was identified as Kamran and a pistol was recovered from his possession.
