600 terror cases pending in Sindh courts

Karachi
There are 600 terrorism cases pending in the province’s courts, it was pointed out at a meeting chaired by the chief minister on Friday.

The participants of the meeting were informed that overall there were 1,438 pending criminal cases. Forty-five new cases were filed in the courts of Karachi and 89 in other districts of the province.

There were six judgements in which punishments were awarded in four of them.

The meeting at the Chief Minister’s House was held to discuss the law and order situation.

The provincial chief executive took serious notice of the target killings on sectarian and ethnic grounds and the attacks on law enforcement agencies’ personnel in the city.

Syed Qaim Ali Shah directed the law enforcement agencies to make concerted efforts to bring the situation under control.

He reminded them that it was the responsibility of the government and the law enforcement agencies to protect the lives and properties of the citizens.

“The law enforcement agencies should evolve a strategy to deal with the situation,” Shah remarked.

Requirements

The chief minister directed provincial police chief Fayyaz Leghari to prepare a plan about the requirements of the police force so that they could be met.

Shah said the provincial government would provide 200 drivers trained at Benazir Youth Training Centres to the police force.

The IGP informed the participants of the meeting that 186 vehicles had been deployed for patrolling in the city, 100 new vehicles were engaged with surveillance cameras and 1,300 policemen inducted into the force after a passing-out parade.

“We are awaiting better results now,” he added.

Recruitment

The police chief said his department had advertised for the recruitment of more police staff (ASIs and constables). The recruitment process, he added, would be completed soon as the last date for the receiving applications was December 24.

Leghari claimed that police and Rangers were effectively working to reduce crime in the city. The provincial information minister, the chief secretary, the additional home chief secretary, the Rangers deputy director general, CID additional IGP, Special Branch additional IGP and the heads of the law enforcement agencies presented their views at the meeting.

The prosecutor general of Sindh gave details about the cases registered against criminals in different courts, particularly in anti-terrorism courts.
