WAPDA demolish NBP, Younis ton boosts HBL

KARACHI: WAPDA on Friday pulled off their second victory when they routed National Bank by an innings and nine runs following a pathetic batting display by the latter on the penultimate day of their four-day match of the President’s Trophy Grade-I at the Iqbal Stadium in Faisalabad.

After having conceded a 122-run lead, National Bank completely failed to negotiate WAPDA’s bowlers and perished for only 113 in 33.2 overs in their second innings.

Left-handed opener Nasir Jamshed, who has played 19 One-day Internationals, offered some resistance, scoring 56 off 83 balls with eight fours, but Hammad Azam (19) and Wahab Riaz (10) were the only others to manage scores in double figures.

Both Test keeper Kamran Akmal and skipper Fawad Alam fell to left-arm seamer Junaid Khan without scoring. Test cricketer Qaiser Abbas was the other man to get out for a duck, bowled by left-arm spinner Zulfiqar Babar who took 3-31 in eight overs, ending with 7-117 in the show.

Okara-born Zulfiqar is the leading wicket-taker in the tournament so far with 47 dismissals.

He is followed by medium-fast bowler Ehsan Adil of Habib Bank with 46 scalps.

Junaid Khan claimed 3-29, finishing with 6-60. Pacer Azhar Attari bagged 3-19.

National Bank had scored 164 in their first innings while WAPDA in response had posted 286. The win lifted WAPDA to 21 points from seven appearances while National Bank have 18 points from seven meetings.

Leaders Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited (SNGPL) were in the driving seat as their rivals Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) were reeling at 60-4 while chasing 279 on a Gaddafi Stadium pitch that was offering help to seamers.

Pakistan captain Shoaib Malik was at the crease on 26. Skipper Kamran Sajid belted 25 with five fours, while opener Shehzar Mohammad (0), Test cricketer Faisal Iqbal (0) and Shoaib Khan Senior (3) failed to click.

Medium-fast bowler Samiullah Khan Niazi took 3-21, while Shoaib got run out.

Earlier, after taking a 133-run lead, SNGPL declared their second innings at 145-5, giving a fighting target to their rivals.

Ali Waqas, who had scored 105 in the first innings, batted superbly in the second as well, hitting 64 with eight fours and a six.

The left-hander, with the fine performance, went to the summit with 531 runs in 11 innings at a handsome average of 59.00.

The Sargodha-born future prospect was also involved in an 87-run third wicket partnership with Test cricketer Azhar Ali who scored 45 off 117 balls with three boundaries. Test opener Taufeeq Umar (14), skipper Misbah-ul-Haq (8) and Mohammad Hafeez (1) were the others who got out.

Test pacer Aizaz Cheema, who had remained wicket-less in the first innings, picked 3-23.

United Bank Limited (UBL) were in deep trouble at 114-3 at close while chasing 429 to win against the second-placed Habib Bank Limited (HBL) at the Pindi Stadium in Rawalpindi.

Imran Ali was batting on 30 and Kashif Bhatti was on 29.

Earlier, Habib Bank, after having got a 52-run lead, resumed their second innings at 175-4 and declared at 376-8. Former Pakistan captain Younis Khan, who was batting on 65 on Thursday, blasted his second century of the season, hitting splendid 133 off 217 balls. His fine knock was studded with 18 boundaries. The Mardan-born right-hander put on 124 runs for the fifth wicket with Usman Salahuddin who scored 50 off 118 deliveries with five boundaries.

Younis has so far scored 445 in nine innings at an average of 49.44. Test wicket-keeper Humayun Farhat, who had blasted 79 in the first innings, made another quick-fire 54 off 29 balls with six fours and two sixes.

Test pacer Shabbir Ahmed chipped in with 4-100, ending with 7-135 in the match while Sheikhupura-born right-arm pacer Atif Jabbar took 3-115.

At the Diamond Club Ground in Islamabad, State Bank were in trouble in their second innings against Zarai Taraqiati Bank Limited (ZTBL) despite gaining a 59 runs lead, as they were 140-9, having an overall lead of 199.

Mohammad Saad belted 39 with five fours while Gulraiz Sadaf scored 34.

Test paceman Mohammad Khalil bowled brilliantly, picking 5-48 while Sohail Tanvir took 3-25.

Earlier, in response to State Bank’s first innings total of 298, ZTBL began the day at 198-7 and were all out for 239. Zohaib Khan, who was at the crease on 37, made 49 with four hits to the fence and Sohail Tanvir contributed 35 with five fours.

Left-arm pacer Saad Altaf took 6-71, while Muhammad Naveed grabbed 3-60.

Port Qasim Authority were on the verge of their second successive win as after gaining a 55-run lead, they had sent nine of KRL batsmen for just 135 in their second innings at stumps.

Tayyab Riaz cracked 35-ball 44 with nine fours while Ali Khan made 36 with three fours and two sixes.

Tanvir Ahmed and left-arm slow Azam Hussain grabbed three wickets each.

Earlier, in response to KRL’s 289, Port Qasim Authority started their first innings at 217-5 and were bowled out for 344. Test opener Khurram Manzoor, who was not on 104, went on to score 152 before being caught by Prince Abbas off Naved Yasin. The right-hander smashed 20 fours in his 276-ball knock lasted for 388 minutes. Ali Khan took three while Saeed Anwar Junior and Yasir Ali claimed two wickets apiece.
