The electricity woes of citizens were likely to multiply as the Karachi Electric Supply Corporation, on Friday, declared that unannounced loadshedding would start in residential areas and be increased in industrial zones due to a shortfall of 500 megawatts (MW) after all the units of the newly installed Bin Qasim Power Station (BQPS)-II tripped.
According to a spokesman for KESC, the tripping of all generation units of BQPS-II caused a sudden and alarming drop in gas pressure.
The spokesman said that volume of gas being supplied to the KESC dropped to 110 MMCFD, while the pressure fell to such an alarming level that generation turbines of the gas-based units of KESC could not function properly. He pointed out that these were the reasons that unannounced power loadshedding started in residential areas.
He said that industrial areas, which had been earlier exempted, experienced sudden instances of loadshedding with the aim to ensure uninterrupted power supply from 5:30 pm to 7:30 pm to 160 feeders of the city during the sacred days of Muharram.
He said that these 160 feeders had been identified as they were connected to those city areas where Muharram-related congregations and other activities would be taking place during the first ten days.
The KESC spokesman did not specify the duration for the loadshedding in residential areas in the city. At present, some residential areas of the city were forced to bear up to seven hours of loadshedding on a daily basis, depending on the financial and technical losses the KESC was suffering in the particular locality.
The KESC appealed to Dr Asim Hussain, the federal government’s advisor on petroleum and natural resources, to use his good offices to get increased gas pressure and volume for KESC’s power plants so that the dwellers of the city could be spared from unannounced loadshedding during Muharram.
Meanwhile, Lateef Mughal, general-secretary of the People’s Workers Union of KESC, condemned the prolonged and unannounced loadshedding and blamed the management of the power utility. He alleged that the management lacked skills and a proper technical team to efficiently produce enough electricity for the needs of Karachi. He demanded that unannounced load shedding come to an end for the comfort of citizens.
