‘Talaash’ and ‘Life of Pi’ open on Friday

Islamabad

Two new films — ‘Talaash’ and ‘Life of Pi’ — will be premiered nationwide on Friday (November 30).

Producer-actor Aamir Khan with Excel Entertainment and director Reema Kagti’s ‘Talaash’ is one of the biggest films of the year. Reema Kagti, who made her directorial debut with Honeymoon Travels (private) Limited, has also co-scripted ‘Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara’. The cast includes Aamir Khan, Rani Mukherji as his wife and Kareena Kapoor as the call girl. The supporting cast is shared by Sonam Kapoor and Raj Kumar Yadav.

‘Talaash’ is a triangle, but mystery has been added to the triangle with a murder committed by a serial killer, its lengthy but engrossing and nail-biting investigation. And guess who is investigating this case! ‘Talaash’ is a psychological thriller scripted by Reema Kagti and Zoya Akhter. Music is by Ram Sampat and a couple of songs are already hits.

The Geo Films must be credited for marketing and releasing the film just the way ‘Talaash’ should have been released with graphically attractive colour advertisement and promotional work. ‘Talaash’ lensed in Mumbai, Pondicherry and London, brings rich technical effects with brisk editing and crisp camerawork, mostly shot at nights.

Pondicherry is also our location for American sea adventure ‘Life of Pi’ in 3-D, directed by Ang Lee. The film is based on a novel by Yann Mastel. Pi, an Indian boy of sixteen, lives in a zoo with his family. Hard to make the ends meet, the family sells the zoo and decides to hit the Canadian shores. What they find is death. Disaster is eagerly awaiting them with a deadly storm, but Pi survives in a lifeboat (remember Cast Away and Robinson Crusoe!). The survival for Pi is not alone. He is in company of a Bengal tiger, hyena and a zebra (created by super digital effects and computer graphics). Remember he lived in a zoo.

The adventure of survival in a lifeboat, filmed with 3-D camera has just the right special effects with continuous thrills for two hours. The rich visuals are captivating. Suraj Sharma as Pi plays well.

Narrated in flashbacks by Irfan Khan, as he takes over as grown up Pi, he recalls his childhood adventures to a Canadian novelist. Tabu is seen in a brief roles as Pi’s mother. Life of Pi in a subtle way pays its modest homage to faith with the child praying “Thank you Vishnu, for introducing me to the Christ.”
