ISLAMABAD: Militant wings of different political parties in Karachi have formed their own informal alliance which would have to be crushed through a merciless operation by the government, claims ruling PPP’s prominent leader from Karachi, Nabeel Gabol.
“These militants, each collect at least Rs10 million per day in extortion and have joined hands while saying goodbye to their respective parties for which they used to work,” he said while talking to The News on Wednesday.
The PPP member expressed his fear that the general election might be bloody particularly in Karachi if the outlaws are given a free hand to continue extorting millions daily. To a query, he said that the militants are no more in the control of their political parties but collecting extortion on daily basis. “They have divided Karachi into three zones generating equal money for each of them. It is an unholy alliance for mutual good.”
Gabol suggested an operation cleanup matching with that carried out in the early 1990s under the supervision of late Naseerullah Babar. “It must be a civilian and not a military one.”
There is no second option for the government whether it is Centre or the provincial government of Sindh to crush these groups as early as possible. “The deweaponisation of Karachi also depends on breaking the back bone of the militants who were earlier functioning under patronage of the three parties but now have separated themselves from them,” he said. The former minister was of the view that neither a member, MNA or MPA, or a minister could mint money as these three groups are accumulating every day. “The law and order is totally dependent upon them.”
“I think the government is in search of a man like Naseerullah Babar to initiate a daring operation irrespective of the political affiliations of the militants,” he said. “The mafia, an amalgamation of three wings, disturbs peace whenever it faces resistance.” “I am not supportive of an army operation because the political parties would start making hue and cry.”
