PESHAWAR: Eulogising the successful holding of disaster management exhibition under the aegis of the University of Peshawar (UoP) Governor Masood Kausar on Thursday said that no effort would be spared to establish risk and disaster-free society in the province.
Addressing the concluding ceremony of the three-day Disaster Preparedness and Management Exhibition held under the aegis of the Disaster Management Centre of the UoP, the governor assured to help it in provision of satellite weather radar system as soon as possible.
“The flood havocs of 2010 created the need that the province must have an early warning system and the government needs to play proactive role in management of disasters,” he added.
More than 48 national and international organisations displayed their products and research findings at the exhibitions.The concluding ceremony was also addressed by the UoP acting Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Qibla Ayaz and Disaster Management Centre Chairman Prof Dr Amir Nawaz Khan.
The governor stressed the need for promotion of awareness and pointed out, “let us not leave every thing to be tackled by government, rather the educational institutions right at the primary level needs to be involved towards promotion of awareness and educate the people.”
Students at all levels, he remarked, should be educated about preventive measures.Talking about historical facts, the governor said Pakistan had been a victim of disasters both natural and manmade ever since its independence.
The governor stressed the need for mainstreaming the process of disaster management in regular development planning and said that efficient coordination amongst respective organisations and institutions was must to avoid vulnerability.
Referring to precautionary measures, he said, the challenges of poor construction practices, lack of land use planning, inefficient early warning system, shortage of professional human resource base, lack of awareness and limited capacity has to be tackled as top priorities.Earlier, the governor went round the various stalls and appreciated the quality and spirit of the exhibitors.
