How to Apply for Employer Identification Number

For starters, it is good to mention that the employer identification number refers to a nine-digit number that is assigned to individuals by the Internal Revenue Authority. The purpose of the employer identification number is for the identification of of tax accounts of employers and certain others who have no employees. The Internal Revenue service uses the employer identification number to identify tax payers that are required to file for a number of business returns. The employer identification number are used by sole proprietors, employers, partnerships, corporations, trusts, non-profit organizations, government agencies, estates of decedents, business entities as well as some unique individuals. Individuals who already have an employer identification number and their organization or ownership of their business changes hands may be required to apply for a new number afresh.
There exists a daily limitation of an employer identification number. As of 21st March 2012, in an effort to ensure fair and equitable treatment across the board for all taxpayers, the Internal Revenue Service limited employer identification number issuance to an one per responsible party per day. It is worth noting that this limitation is applicable to all requests for employer identification numbers be it be by phone, fax, mail or online.
The employer identification number may be applied for in four main ways namely online, via telephone, Fax, and through mail. Most individuals prefer to use the online method to apply for employer identification numbers. This service is availed on weekdays from 0700hrs to 2200hrs, Eastern time through the IRS Portal. All the information that is submitted is usually validated during the online session and once complted the employer identification number is usually furnished immediately. Additionally, individuals who submit through this online option can view, print as well as save their employer identification number assignment notice at the end of their online session. Where taxpayers go through authrorized third party agents, the agents receive the employer identification number but the employer identification number assignment notice is sent directly to the taxpayer.
When an individual applies for employer identification number via telephone, they have to do so during the five business days as from 0700hrs to 1900hrs Eastern time. International applicants have to apply between 0600hrs to 2300hrs Eastern time.
When an individual applies for the same using fax, he or she can get the employer identification number by filing the relevant form and faxing it to the Internal Revenue Authority for processing. Taxpayers who apply for employer identification number using this means will have their application ready within four business days. This service is available on a 24/7 basis.
Taxpayers who opt to apply for their employer identification number by mail must also fill in the relevant documents and mail it to the Internal Revenue Service sentre. They must ensure that they enter all the required information for their applications to be processed expeditiously. Having filed the required information correctly, one can then expect to have ones employer identification number assigned to them within four to five weeks.
