Modern sanitation system in Pindi soon

Punjab government has decided to introduce Modern Sanitation System in all five big cities of the province including Rawalpindi, which would provide a better cleanliness method.

Credible sources told ‘The News’ here Saturday that the new sanitation system, which would contain latest sanitary facilities, the citizens all over Punjab would get rid of old traditional methods of cleanliness.

According to sources, besides Rawalpindi, the new sanitation system would be introduced before next general elections in Murree, Faisalabad, Gujranwala, Multan and Sialkot. Similarly, the new system has been designed on the pattern of Lahore Waste Management Company and similar companies will be formed in these districts. However, the sources told that the new sanitation system would be launched in phases.

In connection with giving new sanitation system to citizens in different parts of the province, Punjab Chief Minister Mian Shahbaz Sharif recently presided over a high-level meeting regarding solid waste management, which was also attended by Parliamentarians of Rawalpindi, Faisalabad, Gujranwala, Multan and Sialkot, related district coordination officers (DCOs) and secretaries of the concerned departments.

The modern sanitation system would be introduced with the cooperation of Turk companies, which would result in substantial improvement in the cleanliness condition in all cities of the respective district.

The sources told that initially the modern sanitation system was introduced in Lahore by the present government, which has now become a role model. The sources stated after achieving better and improved results in Lahore, Punjab government has now decided for extending the scope of this modern system to other districts of the province as well so that a clean and healthy atmosphere could be provided to the citizens. After introduction of new system there would be no need for promoting public awareness regarding the importance of cleanliness and hygiene among the citizens.

According to sources, the Punjab chief minister has directed the concerned authorities of their related districts to finalise short and long term organisational arrangements as soon as possible and submit its report to him at the earliest. For materialising the project into reality, Mian Shahbaz Sharif has also instructed the related officials for the establishment of a steering committee for the capacity-building of the employees associated with solid waste management sector of the five districts and expediting the process of formation of the companies in these districts on the pattern of Lahore.

Similarly, besides modern system of cleanliness, third-party monitoring system would also be introduced in these districts while landfill sites would also be developed for proper disposal of solid waste.

The commissioners and DCOs of the concerned districts have been directed to identify landfill sites as soon as possible. Directions to complete the bidding process expeditiously and transparently besides awarding of the contracts to the successful bidders have also been issued.

According to directions given by the chief minister no employee associated with solid waste management sector in the districts where modern sanitation system is being launched would be removed from service however, there would be no room for corrupt elements in any department.

Commissioners and DCOs of their concerned districts have been ordered to take stern action against the elements involved in corruption. The sources told that with the introduction of modern sanitation system, the Turk company is likely to take up the charge of solid waste management of the union councils of five major cities of Punjab, which also include Rawalpindi. When this correspondent tried to get comments from DCO, Rawalpindi, Captain Saqib Zafar , his cellular was found powered off whenever tried. Commissioner Imadadulla Bosal confirmed the report that the project will be launched by mid of January this year.

Official spokesman for Rawal Town Tehsil Administration (RTTA), Tahir Mahmood Khan confirmed the report saying that modern sanitation system under Solid Waste Management project is in the pipeline, which is likely to be introduced in near future in Rawalpindi besides other major cities of Punjab.
