KARACHI: The Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FPCCI) has urged the government to enhance the age limit of imported used cars from three years to five years, according to a statement on Saturday.
Fazal Kadir Sherani, president of the FPCCI, and Zakria Usman, chairman of the Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce and Industry Standing Committee on Coordination with the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR), while endorsing the views as expressed by the members of the Senate Standing Committee on Foreign Trade, urged the federal minister of commerce to extend the age limit of used cars from three to five years for import in Pakistan, it said.
They argued that the government, instead of penalising the car manufacturers for non-completion of the deletion programme as per the schedule, is providing them unnecessary protection by reducing the age limit of imported used cars.
The reduction in age limit from five year to three years has slashed down sharply the pace of imports of used cars mainly due to increase in their prices by Rs60,000 to Rs260,000 on model from 600cc to 1800cc, respectively, they said.
The decision is taken to provide undue benefit to the local car manufacturing industry, they said, adding that the own money taken by the indigenous car manufacturers from their clients for a long period in the name of advance booking has been increased by Rs100,000 to Rs200,000 due to which an increase of Rs70,000 has been witnessed in the price of small cars.
They said that the decision would affect the people, in general, and the business community, in particular, thus, depriving them of their right to buy a car at reasonable prices.
