Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif said on Tuesday that SAARC countries would have to adopt European Union model to resolve their issues and problems. Unfortunately, he said, the region of SAARC countries had not been peaceful and its history was full of conflicts and wars. However, no result had come out of the wars, except destruction, devastation, poverty and unemployment, he said. He was addressing a function held in honour of members of South Asian Free Media Association (Safma) here.
Shahbaz said that like the European Union, if SAARC countries spent their resources on development of their people, the region could also be transformed into a developed part of the world. He said tension existing in the region could be eliminated by adopting collective thinking, adding that in the past, no sincere effort was made to resolve conflicts. The CM said that by forgetting the bitterness of the past, the South Asian peoples would have to move forward and resolve the problems being faced by the region. He said Pakistan and India were the most important countries of the region which had fought three wars but the wars had not resolved conflicts but increased problems for both the countries. He said all the conflicts, including Kashmir, still existed.
The chief minister said that the world knew that both Pakistan and India were atomic powers and if, God forbid, there was a war between them, hardly anyone would survive.
