Seminar on food security & poverty alleviation held

The Brazilian Embassy, in cooperation with the Ministry of National Food Security and Research, the WFP, FAO and SDPI organised a full-day seminar on ‘Food Security and Poverty Alleviation’ at the Marriott Hotel.

Five Brazilian experts and a WFP expert came from Brazil to share their experiences especially for the occasion and the main features of the vastly successful Brazilian policies on Food Security. The main goal of the event was for them to address the characteristics of the Brazilian Zero Hunger Program (‘Programa Fome Zero’), a public programme that helped lift more than 40 million Brazilians from poverty and that served as a model for the development of many similar policies around the world, including the Zero Hunger Action Plan, launched in March 2012 by the Government of Pakistan.

In the opening session, experts such, as Representative at the WFP Jean-Luc Siblot, Representative FAO Dr. Kevin Gallagher; Minister of State for National Food Security and Research, Moazzam Ali Khan Jatoi; PASSCO Managing Director Major General Tauqeer Ahmed; Secretary of the Ministry of National Food Security and Research, Ahmad Lehari; Additional Secretary of the Ministry of National Food Security and Research, Abdul Basit and chief guest, Federal Minister for Capital Administration and Development Nazar Mohammad Gondal. Ambassador of Brazil, Alfredo Leoni, also addressed the gathering.

In the first session, entitled ‘Tackling Food insecurity through policy making’, public policy issues were addressed. Counsellor at the Brazilian National Food and Nutrition Security Council, Edgard Aparecido de Moura, presented the Brazilian National Policy for Food and Nutritional Security; Specialist in Public Policies and Governmental Administration, of the Brazilian Ministry of Agrarian Development, Ms. Marina Lima, discussed the Brazilian experience on strengthening family agriculture; Special Advisor for Program Development, Presidency of the National Company of Food Supply, Vicente Puhl, talked about the large food procurement program carried out by the Brazilian Government; and, to end the session, Ms. Cassia Amaral, from the General Coordination of the National School Food Program, National Fund for the Development of Education, presented the case of the school feeding program in Brazil. In the end Parc Chairman Dr. Iftikhar Ahmad, shared his views.

After lunch, on the second session, titled ‘Tackling food insecurity and poverty through cooperation’ Edgard Aparecido de Moura again addressed the audience talking about the importance of an inclusive and participative process to the design and implementation of public policies on food security, while Marcos Lopes from the General Coordination of International Actions Against Hunger, Ministry of External Relations, shared the Brazilian experience and recent efforts in sustainable humanitarian cooperation. Deputy Director of the Centre of Excellence Against Hunger of the WFP, Cynthia Jones, presented the work of the Centre of Excellence in Brazil, which is the only such Centre in the world.
