Queues outside CNG stations cause traffic jams

The major arteries of the city once again faced worst kind of traffic jams due to long queues of vehicles in front of CNG stations here on Tuesday. The traffic wardens completely failed to handle the situation for smooth flow of traffic on roads.

A few CNG stations were open in some localities where ‘gas-seeking’ motorists made two or three queues on roads resulting in blockage of traffic throughout the day.

More than 80 per cent CNG stations have not been supplying gas for last thirteen days, while a few stations are supplying CNG that witness long queues of vehicles causing worst kinds of traffic jam on main roads.

Motorists are facing problems due to traffic jams, particularly on Benazir Bhutto Road.

City Traffic Officer (CTO) Syed Ishtiaq Hussain Shah urged citizens to cooperate with traffic wardens and park their vehicles in a single queue instead of making multiple queues in front of CNG stations.

Talking to ‘The News,’ people said the situation is due to mismanagement and lack of proper planning on the part of higher authorities. Traffic wardens should ban second queue on roads outside CNG stations, they said.

They said motorists use different routes to reach their destinations in twin cities like Faizabad or Double Road, Saidpur, Kali Tanki, National Market, Chandni Chowk and BB Road to reach Rawalpindi from Islamabad. But these routes are already congested and it is difficult to drive vehicles. Similarly, those driving to Islamabad from Rawalpindi also use the same routes.

The service roads near Pir Mehr Ali Shah-Arid Agriculture University Rawalpindi are available for movement of traffic on Farooq-e-Azam Road, Transformer Chowk and Chandni Chowk, but nobody wants to use these roads due to long queues of vehicles outside CNG stations.

Muhammad Farooq, a resident of Rawalpindi, said that people were facing problems due to long queues of vehicles on roads near CNG stations. He said that alternative routes were congested and after diversion of vehicles on these routes, traffic jams have become a routine.

A motorist said that the Committee Chowk underpass and Chandni Chowk flyover on Benazir Bhutto Road could not help check the traffic mess mainly due to wrong parking of vehicles and other traffic violations while closure of CNG stations adds fuel to fire.
