PESHAWAR: The Provincial Doctors Association (PDA) Tuesday disowned the Young Doctors Association (YDA) in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and asked the government to take action against its members for forcing the doctors to go on a strike.
The PDA, in its general body meeting at the Hayatabad Medical Complex, said that at a time when the government had already accepted most of their demands, including introducing proper service structure for the promotion of doctors under the four-tier formula, the YDA emerged all of a sudden and started forcing the doctors to go on strike.
PDA Chairman Dr Shah Sawar said that some elements and senior government officials were using the YDA against the doctors and the government, particularly the Health Department.
He said the PDA was the only elected platform of the doctors in the province and called upon the health authorities to take notice of the highhandedness and mistreatment to the senior doctors at the tertiary care hospitals.
Dr Shah Sawar said the PDA had been striving since long to achieve rights of the doctors, adding, “Some elements now wanted to drive a wedge between the doctors and the government.” The PDA chairman alleged that members of the YDA were bringing in outsiders to harass the senior doctors in a bid to make them go on strike.
Dr Shah Sawar said it was the responsibility of the government to protect the doctors during duty hours so that a handful of elements couldn’t force them to observe strike as it would bring a bad name for the doctors.
“The main purpose of our meeting was to inform the government and the people that we have nothing to do with the YDA. This body is backed by those trying to create mistrust between the Health Department and the doctors,” Dr Shah Sawar asserted. PDA President Dr Abdul Qadir and Dr Omar Khattak also addressed the general body and urged the government to take action against the YDA for creating problems for the patients in the public sector hospitals.
