The Karachi Transport Ittehad (KTI) has warned the Sindh additional IG traffic that all KTI members would park their vehicles outside his office in protest if he fails to issue directives against “illegal” impounding of buses, minibuses and coaches.
In a joint statement issued on Monday, KTI President Irshad Hussain Bukhari and General Secretary Saeed Mehmood Afridi said after implementation of the Ticketing System 2010, if a person does not have the documents of the vehicle he is driving, then he is liable to pay a fine.
They said police could confiscate the vehicle until the fine is paid. However, they added, the additional IG releases the vehicles three days after paying the fine.
They also said they had asked the authorities concerned about this practice, but “they seem to understand the language of protests only.”
The KTI office-bearers said they were trying not to give a strike call because the law and order situation of the metropolitan was already at its worst.
“Why does it not make sense to the additional IG that the entire public transport has come to a standstill because of the strike of CNG filling stations’ owners?” they asked.
They also asked if the higher authorities of the traffic police would be bothered if they revealed how much extortion money the authorities have collected from their subordinate officers.
They requested the authorities concerned to take notice of how ruthlessly their vehicles are being torched and how the affected transporters are not being compensated despite observing strikes.
They said there was a riot in the city every day and the public transporters’ vehicles end up with shattered glasses.
Due to the expensive prices of diesel, owners of buses and minibuses are switching over to CNG, but everyone is aware of the issue of the availability of the gas, they added.
The KTI members said the police high-ups have been attempting to destroy their businesses to keep their dirty secrets hidden.
