The passenger transport and procurement teams of Hampshire County Council won the prestigious local authority award on account of securing an impressive saving of over £1 million. The council received the "2012 Society of Procurement Officers in Local Government Award" for their excellent performance on the Client Transport Efficiency Project. Reportedly, the team could make a saving of over £1 million in this project for the council.
"This project is a deserving winner as it has enabled us to achieve savings and maximise value for money, while opening up new routes for suppliers who have not previously dealt with us," commented Councillor Mel Kendal- the executive member and deputy leader for transport and environment.
"Online tendering has made a significant difference to the procurement process. We will now be looking to build on this success to improve our procurement processes further and generate even more savings," added Kendal.
Those in the manager jobs or other careers in the procurement on the transportation and procurement teams partnered for exploring newer ways of providing transport options for client, public and commercial schemes. The team was provided with a combined budget of about £26.5 million. Working with various departments, schools and parents, the team streamlined the process of procurement.
With the launch of online tendering, delivery of the services could be sped up and drop-in centres were opened in a bid to encourage local suppliers to connect. In the meantime, FindGood's report suggested that the procurement teams are expected to play a vital role in the selection of marketing agencies in near future. The reason behind this was the fact that about a third of marketers prefer using the internal purchasing employees while making selection decisions.
"Buying marketing has become more hairy over the years, so using in-house procurement is invaluable," added Kimberley Mears- FindGood's managing director. "More agencies are doing the same to ensure their company gets the best value and follows the right criteria."
