Gynaecomastia: The Causes, Possible Treatments and Characteristics

Gynaecomastia is the abnormal enlargement of grandular tissue in the breasts of males. It may take place on different life stages of a man. Some young boys develop gynaecomastia during infancy or puberty. However, some mature men also experience this issue and find the abnormal mammary glands development, and it may happen to adolescents and elderly patients too. In fact, this abnormal enlargement is quite common for younger and older patients. It is a very popular reason why a male breast is checked upon by the doctor. It is important to consult with your doctor and distinguish the condition from either lipomastia or pseudogynecomastia as the latter conditions are related to the excessive fat deposits that males with obesity suffer from. The real gynaecomastia is found only on those patients who have breast tissue (also called grandula), and the number of these patients is rather limited.

The main reason behind the formation of excessive grandular tissue in the male breasts is the hormonal misbalance that seriously affects men's health. The estrogen hormones which are recognized as female ones outweigh androgen hormones which are male, and the excessive abnormal tissue forms in male breasts. The transient shifts in hormone levels cause this condition but the abnormal tissue is removed by itself in the period from six months to two years.
Another reason for gynaecomastia to take place is the abuse of drugs and side effects of long-term medication courses. There are also several medical conditions that are traditionally associated with gynaecomastia including cirrhosis of liver, hyperthyroidism, and kidney failure. If you are faced with this problem, you should not panic because there are medications and treatments that can either prevent, stop or remove the development of gynaecomastia.
Younger boys usually cope with this problem by themselves, and such self-passing condition is called physiologic gynaecomastia.

Medical conditions like excessive diet and malnutrition, male genitals disorders, and other hormone-related conditions are associated with gynaecomastia.
However, in order to support your men's health and fight the formation of abnormal grandular tissue, you can take testosterone replacements that are more efficient in mature and elderly patients who have low testosterone levels, clomiphene which is more appropriate for those with normal testosterone but abnormal estrogen hormones, selective estrogen receptor modulators that slow down the process of breast formation but do not completely remove it (this method is used for especially painful conditions), and danazol which is an artificial analogue for testosterone and eliminates the weight of estrogen by the use of testes.

In severe cases you can also try a surgical operation and remove the excessive tissue form your male breasts. It is called reduction mammoplasty, and is usually recommended for severe gynaecomastia, long-term condition or cases when medication therapy has not shown to be effective.
