MANSEHRA: Angry passengers travelling in a convoy of 30 vehicles Sunday blocked the Karakoram Highway (KKH) here for over four hours by torching tyres at the Butt Bridge.
The passengers had been stopped in Mansehra for the last two days owing to sectarian tension in Gilgit city. The protesters chanted slogans against the Gilgit-Baltistan administration and said the police and other law-enforcing agencies had failed to keep order.
Speaking on the occasion, some of the passengers, including Fazlur Rahim, Mohammad Safdar and others said the convoy had been stopped since December 12 owing to poor law and order situation in Gilgit city.
They said the Gilgit-Baltistan government had failed to keep order and asked the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government to restrict the entry of the convoys into the area. The KKH was blocked at about 6am and was re-opened to traffic at 10am when District Police Officer of Mansehra Sher Akbar Khan directed the police to allow the convoy to proceed further.
When contacted, DPO Sher Akbar Khan confirmed that the Gilgit-Baltistan Home Department had sought help from the Hazara division administration for blocking the entry of convoys because of the sectarian clashes in Gilgit.
