CNG supply to resume today

Finally, after 14-day strike owners and dealers of compressed natural gas (CNG) stations have decided to open gas supply from Sunday. They also announced to sell CNG on the rates fixed by the Supreme Court of Pakistan at Rs61 per kilogram till further directions of the apex court.

Owners and dealers in a general body meeting here on Saturday decided to open gas supply from today after three-day gas load management schedule.

Owners and dealers of compressed natural gas (CNG) stations told ‘The News’ that Prime Minister Raja Pervaiz Ashraf assured to resolve price matter.

All Pakistan CNG Association (APCNGA) Supreme Council Chairman Ghayas Abdullah Piracha told ‘The News’ that all stations would start supply of gas from today. “It was an individual strike by the owners and dealers, but now I have requested all of them to open supply from today,” he claimed. “Secondly, we want to break the monopoly of those owners and dealers who are selling CNG on double prices during strike days and committed violation of Supreme Court orders,” he added.

He said: “We would sell compressed natural gas (CNG) as per price fixed by the apex court till the further orders. But, Supreme Court should take action against those owners and dealers who sold CNG on double rates at Rs80 to Rs120 during strike days,” he said.

He said: “some government officials presented us as ‘villain’ before nation and the Supreme Court, but we are innocent.”

Pothohar Region CNG Association Chairman Abid Abdullah said that they would start gas supply from Sunday. He said that Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited (SNGPL) has sent us gas bills of higher amounts, and they won’t be able to pay it in the prevailing circumstances.

Ogra’s Joint Director Amir Nusrat, when contacted by ‘The News’ said that they tried to resolve the matter. He admitted that public faced a lot of difficulties for several days. “We have obeyed the orders of the Supreme Court so owners and dealers should also obey the orders,” he said.

Over 90 per cent CNG stations were not supplying gas for the last 14 days in the Potohar Region including federal capital.

A survey conducted by ‘The News’ during strike days, some of the CNG stations were operational and were selling gas at double rates. Some of the CNG stations remained open till late in the night to sell gas for Rs120 per kilogram against fixed prices of Rs61 per kilogram. The closure of CNG stations also led to a unilateral increase in fares by the transporters.

Talking to ‘The News’ commuters said that due to strike they have to wait for local transport for hours adding strike multiplied their problems, as majority of public transport vehicles were off the road.

Mohammad Noman Mazhar, a commuter, said that there was not only shortage of transport, but those who were plying their vehicles on petrol were fleecing the commuters. But, government was seeing the whole drama with closed eyes. He questioned as why the government played the role of a silent spectator and not intervened to settle the matter earlier.
