City to get DNA lab in 90 days, says Ebad

A state-of-the-art DNA testing facility is being established in Karachi and it would start functioning within the next 90 days, said the Sindh governor on Tuesday.

Talking to the media after a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signing ceremony at the Governor House, Dr Ishratul Ebad Khan said a thalassaemia centre would also be established in Hyderabad like in other cities of the province.

An agreement was signed by Dow University of Health Sciences (DUHS) Vice Chancellor (VC) Prof Masood Hameed Khan and Abbott Laboratories Pakistan (ALP) Country Manager Habib Ahmed in the presence of university syndicate members, and professors and faculty of the varsity, with the governor as the chief guest.

The MoU has been signed for Total Lab Automation equipment placement and product supply at DUHS’s Ojha Campus.

The principle approach of establishing Total Lab Automation is to improve quality, reduce turnaround times for laboratory test results, save money and increase productivity.

The governor said DUHS was undoubtedly a great asset for the country and it had potential, backed by a competent, committed and visionary leadership, which would soon make the university a centre of excellence in all types of medical care in the region.

He said it was a pleasure seeing the public sector university enter into a joint venture to serve the poor people of the country.

He stressed enhancing the research capabilities of the staff and asked the pharmaceutical companies to come forward and join the universities to promote a culture of research in the country.

He appreciated the efforts of the DUHS VC for his dynamic leadership qualities the in establishment and developments of the university in a short span of time.

The governor also announced providing 10 fully-equipped ambulances and 10 dialysis machines to the DUHS to facilitate kidney patients.

The ALP country manager said the Total Lab Automation system provided complete automation for all pre-analytic, analytic and post-analytic processing steps, as well as IT Automation to get patients’ requests from and transmit reports to the Hospital Laboratory Information System on real-time basis.

He said the system had been designed with keeping in mind both the current workload and the future growth in volume.

The project involves an upfront investment of $2.5 million on the part of Abbott Diagnostics in the form of hardware installation only, he added.

He also said, “We are strongly committed to making this partnership a success and a practical role model for others to replicate.”

The DUHS VC said the university planned to acquire the latest technology of Total Lab Automation to meet the international standards, minimise human errors and increase the working capacity.

He said the basis of this partnership was to provide world-class diagnostic results to the masses at the most affordable cost by implementing the high-tech Total aLab Automation solution that would enable them to get accurate results in the most effective and efficient manner.

The total initial capacity of Total Lab Automation will be to handle 1,200 patients per day and then be increased up to 7,200 patients a day, he added.

The VC said the population of interior Sindh and Karachi would benefit from the automation facility.
