Body formed to probe Rs7 bn corruption a day, NA told

ISLAMABAD: Minister for Religious Affairs Syed Khurshid Ahmad Shah on Thursday informed the National Assembly that a committee headed by Law Minister Farooq H Naek has been constituted to probe the revelations made by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) about the daily corruption of Rs6-8 billion.

It was also stated that the NAB chairman would be summoned to know how and where such massive corruption was under way. He said the committee will hold its first meeting on Monday and all the stakeholders, including the NAB chairman and anti-corruption officers, registrar of the Supreme Court and members of the Public Accounts Committee (PAC), have been invited to attend this meeting. “We will ask them to tell the government where the corrupt practices are taking place,” he said.

He said that he did not know as to what was Transparency International and whether the people have opened their shops of corruption which is touching the figure of Rs7 billion. He also asked the PML-N to attend the meeting and guide the government on the issue.

Earlier, the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) asked the government to take up the disclosure of the NAB chairman about the phenomena of Rs7 billion corruption on a daily basis in the country, saying it would not attend any meeting which may be convened to look into the statement of the NAB chairman.

Khawaja Muhammad Asif of the PML-N speaking on a point of order questioned what was the need of constituting a committee against the backdrop of observations of the NAB chairman who had been appointed by the government on the recommendation of somebody else. “This is a matter between the government and the NAB chairman and it should not waste the time of the House and other parties on this issue,” he said.

Khawaja Asif said the government might have averted embarrassment today had it stopped the flood of corruption in 2008 when the ruling party came into power. “The government should resolve the issue on its own and should not waste time of the nation and this House,” he said.

He said that there is rampant corruption in the FBR, PIA, Railways, Steel Mills, EOBI and other big institution.

Rana Tanveer Hussain of the PML-N was of the view that the government should take the statement of the NAB chairman seriously. “There is also leakages in tax collection as the government in last five years has not been able to achieve targets of revenue generation every financial year,” he said.

He said the figures of corruption could not be compared with the volume of the annual budget as there are different forms of corruption in the country.
