Ban on private students from appearing in science subjects criticised

Condemning the ban by the Punjab government barring private students of Punjab Education Boards from appearing in science subjects in the Secondary School Certificate (SSC) examinations, the representatives of All Pakistan Private Schools Management Association (APPSMA), Rawalpindi, have decided to approach the court against it.

They also criticised the procedure of early examination of the SSC for private students and termed it an anti-education policy measure by the Punjab government.

The representatives of the APPSMA headed by its president, Rawalpindi division, Ibrar Ahmed Khan, expressed their concern during a meeting of the owners of private schools here on Tuesday.

Ibrar informed that the Punjab government imposed a ban on private students from appearing in science subjects in the SSC examination. However, with the intervention of the APPSMA, which approached the court against the ban, private students were able to appear in science subjects in the SSC examinations last year. “The same method is adopted during the current academic year. It was believed that through new scheme of studies, the government would lift the ban but it has not been done. Similarly, in accordance with new scheme of studies, the questions of science practical have been included in theory papers and the marks of practical are also reduced. Such strange system of bans and study schemes do not exist anywhere in the world,” he added.

Moreover, Ibrar also expressed his anguish and concern over the holding of SSC examinations in the third week of February in 2013 instead of March. The examination would now be held on February 23 instead of second week of March, he told the heads of private educational institutions. “It is not possible for students and teachers to cover the syllabus of Punjab Text Books with lot of changes in it within 15 days before the first schedule date of examinations, which are held in March. The new method has created a lot of confusion, also creating tension among hundreds of students of private institutions, Ibrar observed.

He appealed to the Punjab Chief Minister, Mian Shahbaz Sharif to take immediate notice of the matter and issue necessary directions to the concerned authorities in educational departments to end confusion and tension among the students as well as teachers. If no positive action is taken, then the association would have no other option, but to approach the High Court against the ban and early holding of SSC examination, Ibrar Ahmed openly announced.
