What To Look For In Hot Tub Replacement Pumps

Author: Jeremy P Stanfords

Maintaining a clean and healthy hot tub requires regular cleaning, attention to detail and knowledge of how the system works. If a component stops working or starts to show signs of wear, then it is important to replace that part. Hot tub pumps are one component that must be replaced if the unit stops functioning. The pump is vital to the operation of the spa. Without this essential piece of gear, the water will become harder to clean, the basin will start to stain and the heating system will become less efficient, if it works at all. There are several things to look for when purchasing a replacement pump.

Variable or Single Speed

The motor inside of hot tub pumps is configured either for a single speed or for variable speeds. Nearly all units are either one or two speed. Determining the speed of the pump will help to narrow down the number of replacement options that are available. It is not normally recommended to upgrade the pump if the larger system is not designed to handle the added pressure that is created from faster moving water. There are other systems, however, that are designed to handle variable speeds so that upgrading is easy. The manufacturer specifications should be checked to see what type of replacement is appropriate.

Horsepower

It is important to purchase a replacement motor that has close to the same horsepower as the original unit. Optimally, the same amount of power should be purchased in order to prevent problems. Buying a motor that has a slightly higher amount of horsepower is fine in most cases as long as the increase is not more than one or two horsepower over the original. Jumping up more than two horsepower when replacing the motor could result in problems such as broken pipes or damaged components that are unable to deal with the added force.

Outlet Voltage

The electrical voltage of the original unit should be noted when choosing a replacement. Hot tub pumps are manufactured in only two voltages and the outlet that runs the motor will be one of these two options. Selecting the wrong voltage could cause the motor to malfunction and burn out quickly. Alternately, the wrong voltage could create a fire hazard that will eventually destroy the outlet and possibly the tub.

Fitting Size

The final thing to look for is the size of the pipes that hook directly into the unit. Hot tub pumps have differently sized fittings built into the body. Installing the replacement unit will be much easier if the pipes fit perfectly into the unit. The size should be listed on the body or in the manual. Measuring the plumbing will also work. The correct size will actually be a fraction of an inch lower than the width of the pipe opening.
