Usman to feature in Asian shotgun event

KARACHI: Pakistan’s emerging skeet shooter Usman Chand from Sialkot is leaving on Saturday to take part in the 2nd Asian Championship Shotgun, which is to be held in Patiala, India, from November 28 to December 9.

“I have got the visa, and this is for the first time I am representing my country on the international level,” said Usman Chand while talking to “The News”. “I aim to come back with a gold medal.”

There will be 117 players of 12 countries vying for the medals. “I have made good preparations, so I am hopeful of achieving something big for my country. I am not nervous. I am in fact happy that I will get to play in such a big event,” said Usman.

He said that after this tournament he would take part in an event to be held in Kuwait in February 2012. He would also participate in the World Cup, which is to be held in the United Arab Emirates in March.

Usman said that all these events would help him prepare for the next Olympics. “It’s actually how I am preparing myself for the next Olympics. I started this game some six years back at the district level. Then, moving forward, I won all gold medals in the categories of trap, double trap, and skeet at provincial level in Punjab games this year,” said 28-year-old Usman.

Meanwhile, Secretary National Rifle Association of Pakistan (NRAP) Javed Lodhi said Usman would be the only player from Pakistan taking part in this championship. “Others have their commitments, so Usman was chosen to represent the country at this event,” he added.
