To be a nice graphic designer is really hard, especially if working on some advertisements. However, even amateurs have some primitive skills in managing fonts, colors, décor details and many other, which, of course, depend on individual's taste. Therefore, to become a good graphic designer there are some simple rules, or in other words mistakes recommended avoiding.
1. Do not use popular fonts for every project. In fact, it is associated with those ones feeling comfortable only with Times New Roman, Helvetica or Arial. It is a common mistake that spoils unique and original image. Every font should be appropriate and fitting to the main purpose of the picture, poster or postcard. There are plenty of newly created typefaces, such as Futura, Avenir, different versions of Gothic fonts that may complete the project well.
2. Do not put "double enter", especially between paragraphs or headlines. Indeed, big gaps between lines make reading uncomfortable and hard to get the main idea.
3. Try to avoid using background boxes to make text visible and emphasized. Incorrect usage might make an image fraying. To highlight some text, you can use the headers, spaces, or a different font.
4. Photoshop is not always a good aid. In fact, there are people who dislike any improvement with Photoshop applications, like shade or portrait images. Too much Photoshop is no good any way. Unless, you are keen on testing new software programs.
5. Making lists does not force designers to put tags, as the most popular tool. It is out of any graphic fashion for a long time. There are so many opportunities to put dots or some symbols in order to make the list highly professional and attractive.
6. Correct writing is an obvious aspect of every design project.
7. Making borders and frames is often a prerogative for official documents. However, if you are working on invitations or postcards, it is better to use gaps.
8. CAPS LOCK is a total opposite to readability. In this context, to perceive the line fully, one should consider avoiding it. Words are formed in one shape and are really unlikely to distinguish. It is better to use Italian or bold versions, or the other typeface. At the very least, it is better to put Initial fonts in very small phrases.
9. To make some accents, underlined text is good. In contrast, on web-pages it is better to put some links and URLs.
10. Follow the principles of appropriate décor and readability.
