ISLAMABAD: Tax authorities have decided to issue special notices to 100 major defaulters for not paying their taxes, said officials on Thursday.
Despite enjoying luxurious houses in posh areas, possessing expensive vehicles and going on foreign visits during the last few years, these defaulters have not paid a single penny to the national exchequer, they said.
“Of three million non-filers, the FBR has selected 100 major non-filers on random basis and special notices will be served before approval of the amnesty scheme,” said officials in the FBR.
Through tabling the bill in the National Assembly in the upcoming session, the tax managers will make efforts to amend the existing income tax laws that will empower them to block computerised national identity cards (CNIC) at the time of initiating provisional assessment if potential non-filers preferred not to reply to the special notices issued by the FBR, they said.
The list of major non-filers comprised 450 potential tax dodgers at the initial stage but it was further slashed down to 100 individuals who will now be targeted to testify the authenticity of their profile data.
These non-filers will be made an example for others who remain outside the upcoming amnesty scheme, said officials.
“We are working simultaneously on preparing profiles of major non-filers, as well as on tabling bills in the upcoming session of the National Assembly,” said officials, adding that the FBR would catch the dodgers this time.
According to Plan B, if the amendment in the Finance Bill got stuck up in the Parliament, then the FBR would directly issue notices to the defaulters and apprised them about in-depth knowledge of their income and asked them to come under the tax net.
The profile of selected 100 non-filers revealed that one renowned singer who lives in DHA Lahore had travelled abroad 46 times and owned BMW vehicle but he did not deposit a single penny in the national exchequer. The singer, known for his involvement in philanthropic activities, possessed around 24 bank accounts but not paying due taxes, said officials.
There is another non-filer who is resident of Lahore Cantt and he travelled 46 times abroad during the last five years, mainly in renowned and expensive capitals. His wife travelled 13 times and during one visit in London, she stayed for 215 days. The non-filer possessed three vehicles, including Porsche motor car, Honda Civic and Suzuki Alto and possessed 21 banks accounts.
According to the FBR’s data, he did not pay a single penny to the national exchequer.
Another non-filer is a renowned retired cricketer hailing from Karachi and residing in DHA. He travelled abroad 26 times and his wife travelled eight times in the last few years but no tax was paid. He possessed Toyota Premio and Toyota Suceed and holds 12 bank accounts.
There is another non-filer who is residing in one of the posh areas of Abbottabad and travelled abroad for 74 times in the last five years. He possessed several accounts and several cars are being registered on his name but he did not pay any taxes.
