Sindh rules out military operation as solution to violence

Karachi

The Sindh government said on Tuesday a military operation was no solution to the lawlessness in Karachi as that option was exercised in the past but it could not establish a durable peace.

“Karachi is being destabilised under a foreign plot to weaken the economy of the country and punish it for being a nuclear power,” said Information Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon at a press conference held at the Sindh Secretariat.

Admitting that the law and order situation was deteriorating in the metropolis, he said that previously “global powers” hatched a conspiracy to stoke ethnic and political violence but they failed in their nefarious design, and after their failure they became involved in instigating sectarian violence.

Memon urged the religious scholars to cooperate with the government in foiling such foreign plots.

He noted that around 700 cops had been deployed for the security of judges in the city. He said each murder could not be treated as a target killing. The information minister said police and Rangers had detained a large number of pillion riders and urged the people to respect the law.

In order to establish peace during Muharram, he said, the government had decided that only Muharram processions would be allowed. He said the government also planned to hold talks with religious and political leaders soon to pacify the situation.

Memon admitted that unless illegal weapons were recovered, peace could not be restored to the provincial capital. He also presented a list of crimes committed during the current year.

According to an official report, around 2,101 people were killed in Karachi during the last 11 months. Of them 37 fell victim to sectarian violence, 121 suspects were killed in police encounters, while 126 cops also lost their lives.

The report said around 32 search operations were conducted, in which 1,580 suspects were detained.

A total of 130 extortionists were also arrested while one extortionist was killed.

The PPP leader alleged that PML-N Sindh vice president Imdad Chandio was involved in the murder of four persons in Larkana. He said a son of another PML-N leader, Mumtaz Bhutto, was involved in a land grabbing case.

CM chairs meeting

Chief Minister Qaim Ali Shah held an emergency meeting to discuss the law and order situation late on Tuesday night and expressed his dissatisfaction over the state of affairs in the city.

He warned that any negligence of the part of the police would not be tolerated and he told the law enforcers to ensure increased patrolling and snap checking.
