Sense of insecurity prevails in Rawalpindi

Rawalpindi

An advanced version of technique to commit crime has been introduced in Rawalpindi this year, as carjackers lift well-protected vehicles from houses and garages by cutting gate latches.

A sense of insecurity prevails in localities where incidents of carjacking by cutting gate latches took place during last ten months.

The crime statistics of Rawalpindi District have multiplied people’s fear. According to these figures, 105 vehicles — 59 cars and 46 motorcycles — parked inside houses were stolen by cutting gate latches during 10 months of the current year (from January 1 to October 31).

Most incidents of door hook breaking took place in the jurisdictions of Sadiqabad, Airport, Westridge, Sadar Bairuni, Taxila and Sadar (Wah Cantonment) police stations, the crime data disclosed.

As many as 1,524 vehicles, including 698 cars, 668 motorcycles and 215 others, were stolen or snatched from areas in the jurisdictions of different police stations of Rawalpindi district during last ten months, it said.

The report, indicating alarming situation, disclosed that 12 girls were gang-raped till November 11, 2012, as compared to 6 during the same period in 2011 with 100% increase. As many as 8 people were killed by armed robbers during 507 reported robberies, the crime figures said.

“The growing trend of gang-rape and rape indicates rising tendency of lawlessness in society as criminals do not feel fear before committing such a heinous crime,” said High Court Advocate Rizwan Abbasi dealing with such cases when asked.

“The crime situation has never been as bad as it is now. There is no feeling of security inside homes or on roads. Armed gangsters barge daily into homes, jewellery shops, banks and other premises without any fear at all times of the day,” he said.

A man, whose new car was lifted from the garage of his house recently, told this correspondent that he woke up when carjackers were cutting the properly locked gate latch of his house, but he didn’t dare to intercept them. “They hold people at gunpoint and loot whatever they can lay their hands on. Resist and they will kill you. Having accomplished their mission, these desperados escape from the scene even in the presence of police patrolling in the area,” he said expressing his anger. He added, “In fact, gangsters feel safer when police are around.”

He said the street crime too has increased sharply. A wave of insecurity has gripped people, but police authorities do not care about the increasing graph of street crime. “Police do not register cases of theft to show the crime rate down,” he maintained.

“Quite amazing, all these street crimes take place not only in the dark alleys of towns and cities but also in broad daylight in busy markets and on main roads,” the victim maintained while expressing his anger over ineffective police patrolling.

Daring criminals are going for the quick strike, targeting pedestrians, snatching purses and mobile phone sets and lifting vehicles in the city, the victim said, adding that car and mobile phone snatching has become a favourite offence for street criminals as they commit these offences within minutes and disappear from the scene.
