Nisar vows to block passage of three bills

ISLAMABAD: Leader of the opposition in the National Assembly Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan has said his party will strongly resist the passage of three bills pertaining to public office holders’ accountability, tax amnesty and abolition of the death penalty.

“We will use our full parliamentary force to stop passage of toothless accountability bill, abolition of death penalty and tax amnesty which are intended to promote the personal agenda of Asif Zardari and his associates and to please the external powers,” said Ch Nisar while talking to newsmen outside the Parliament House.

To a question, the opposition leader said they would do their best to block the passage of these bills by Parliament so as to avoid moving the Supreme Court against the legislation. “We will not allow such legislation to be passed in the last months of NA’s term,” he said.

He also told newsmen that he has completed consultations on the new caretaker prime minister with the opposition parties inside and outside Parliament and that consensus is emerging on the names of two retired judges.

On public office holders’ accountability bill, Chaudhry Nisar said they would not let the government bulldoze this bill in the House like it did during the meeting of the National Assembly’s standing committee on Monday. “The bill was bulldozed in the committee despite our reservations but we will see how they bring it in the National Assembly,” he said.

Ch Nisar regretted that the government was least interested in implementing the resolutions adopted by Parliament and instead remained busy promoting the personal agenda of Asif Zardari and his cronies.

He pointed that the tax amnesty scheme was aimed at whitening the looted and black money of Asif Zardari and his aides.

He said his party would strongly oppose the abolition of death penalty saying the exercise was aimed at pleasing some foreign powers. “As a Muslim my belief is that penalty for killing somebody is capital punishment,” he said and added that death penalty in Pakistan was not a controversial issue but the government was trying to make it controversial. He told newsmen that foreign envoys have met him to discuss different issues and the Swedish envoy also met him to talk to him on this particular matter.

He denied differences with Nawaz Sharif on the issue of investigations through FIA after the Supreme Court decision in the Asghar Khan case. “A number of party leaders have the same point of view that I have - that there should be no investigations through FIA,” he said adding Nawaz Sharif had his own views as allegations were raised on his personality.
