Mulla Nazir injured, seven killed in Wana suicide hit

WANA: Seven militants were killed and 15 others, including Mulla Nazir, who is considered a pro-government local Taliban chief, sustained injuries when a suicide bomber riding a motorbike blew himself up near the vehicle of the militant commander in Rustam Adda in South Waziristan on Thursday.

Sources said that in the attack, apparently targeting Mulla Nazir, his two key commanders were killed besides five others on the spot. Mulla Nazir, leading a large faction of militants in South Waziristan, also sustained injuries in the blast.

Soon after the incident, militants of the Mulla Nazir group besieged the area and closed Rustam Adda, the sources said. They shifted their injured colleagues to a private clinic in the area. Four among the injured were reported to be in precarious condition. However, their names could not be ascertained.

Mulla Nazir, dubbed as a pro-government Taliban leader, became prominent when he organised and led a lashkar to dislodge the foreign militants, particularly of the Uzbek origin from Wana, the headquarters of South Waziristan tribal region, a few year ago.

Unknown militant groups had made several attempts on his life, yet he survived such bids, including the latest attack when a suicide bomber had been sent to eliminate him. He sustained injuries and his vehicle was destroyed in the incident.

One of his confidantes told reporters that Mulla Nazir sustained injuries to his legs and was shifted to an undisclosed location, adding that they were not yet sure who had planned the attack against them.

The tribal sources said the Pakistani government had ordered local tribesmen to expel foreign and other militants who came there from different areas of Pakistan and were involved in attacking the Pakistani forces.

“The tribesmen then asked Mulla Nazir to expel foreign militants and Pakistani militants who are opposed to the Pakistani forces. Mulla Nazir promised to do this but sought some time,” a tribal elder familiar with these developments said.Mulla Nazir had also signed a peace accord with the government in 2007.
