Background
Jacobsen Egg Chair is considered to be one of the most unique design furniture in the 20th century. It was originally created by Arne Jacobsen for the lobby and reception area of a Royal Hotel, owned by the airline Scandinavian Airlines System (SAS), at that time called Radisson Blu Royal Hotel in Copenhagen in 1958. The Egg Chair has been designed to have a contrast to the hotel's exclusively vertical and horizontal surfaces. The Egg's success soon gained its Danish design furniture reputation for Jacobsen by its easily recognized shape and real comfort.
The egg was designed in typical Jacobsen's style in his own garage with a plaster cast. It is believed that it was inspired by Eero Saarinen's "Womb chair". But the egg is in a more complex and complete presentation. Jacobsen designed the egg to be a couch also, only a few being produced for Radisson Hotel and some were made as limited edition couch. One of the reasons of its limited production was to make it exclusive and another was a "design flaw". The fact was the couch is too big to be covered by two entire cow-hides and is only possible with the Egg. Nowadays one can be very expensive and furniture collectors are willing to pay as high as £40,000 for an original one in good condition.
Designer Profile
Arne Jacobsen (11 February 1902 – 24 March 1971) was a Danish architect and furniture designer. He studied at the Architecture School at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts from 1924 to 1927. As a student he won a silver medal for his chair design in an International Exhibition of Arts Décoratifs School in Paris. After graduation, in 1929 he designed a "House of the Future" project and won the competition organized by a Danish Architect's Association. This project featured a spiral-shaped, flat-roofed house in glass and concrete, with a private garage, a boathouse and a helicopter pad. He is famous for his contributions to architectural functionalism and minimalism in design. But his finest and most famous masterpiece of work is probably the project with Royal Radisson Hotel in the 60s. From there, he showed his extraordinary talent in designing modern design chair and brought a huge success of the Egg. The Egg has been established as a modern classic in interior furniture ever and becomes more and more popular in household design furniture market.
