Is Your Emergency Communication or Life Safety System Missing A Vital Component?

Author: Jeremy P Stanfords

Effective emergency management hinges on one thing: clear and comprehensive communication. Unfortunately a lot of facility notification systems are missing an important element: visual emergency notification displays.

The Need for Emergency Textual Notification
People aren't always smart in emergencies. The most common problem isn't panic; it's lack of action. What is going on? Where am I supposed to go? Is this a real emergency? It's too cold to go outside to the rally point. I'm too busy to leave right now. People mill around looking for direction and without clear instructions may just go back to their previous activities even if their lives are in danger.
Adding emergency textual notification via LED displays will help. Emergency notification displays provide information based on the nature of a crisis. Pre-programmed messages triggered by your emergency notification or life safety system can provide instructions for a bomb threat, a fire, a gunman or an approaching tornado. In a fire employees should leave the building, but in a tornado they should evacuate to the storm shelter in the basement. Adding LED emergency notification displays to your school or enterprise helps your students or employees know what to do.

Supplementing Traditional Communication
Some facilities supplement their campus alerting solutions by giving instructions over a public address system. Modern business telephone systems often include emergency communication features that allow designated personnel to make announcements company-wide. However if an employee misses an announcement or doesn't hear the instructions correctly, it can be as bad as no instruction at all.
Another option is to use campus emergency coordinators to rally and organize response. A central management person can contact this handful of trained people to let them know what is happening and how to react. The coordinators gather other people in the area to move them to a place of safety. However, if a coordinator is sick, in a meeting, or in the bathroom then the system breaks down. Modern response systems need emergency visual communication for maximum safety in a crisis.

Visual Communication
An emergency visual communication system combines the automation and far reach of an alarm with the versatility of a public address system as well as adding its own benefits. There is no danger of missing or mishearing an announcement because the message stays on the display. Many people absorb visual information more easily than auditory messages to will respond more quickly to these displays than to announcements. Of course, visual communication displays provide assistance for the hearing impaired or in areas with high noise levels or poor acoustics.

The best visual emergency notification displays have to be highly visible even in smoky conditions, and has to operate reliably if the power goes out. When used in conjunction with a system of alarms, public announcements, training and emergency drills they maximize the chance that everyone in the area will escape an emergency situation unharmed.
Now is the time to start preparing your facility for the next emergency. If your life safety or emergency communication system doesn't include emergency LED displays then it's time to implement this component before the next crisis hits.
