Islamabad: The recent deaths occurring due to the use of a cough syrup in Lahore reflect the lack of interest of the federal and provincial governments in health care of its citizens, the Pakistan Islamic Medical Association (PIMA) alleged here on Thursday.
“The drug scandal that claimed precious lives earlier this year should have alerted our policy makers on the need to regulate drugs and to establish drug testing laboratories in major cities. The recent deaths show that the country still lacks high-tech facilities that can trace out minute impurities, one possible reason for fatalities,” a press statement points out.
PIMA has urged the government to hold its own officials accountable by asking them what they have done in the last eight months when a similar case took place in that very city. “It should complete the judicial probe and whoever is found guilty should be punished so that no one has the audacity to play with people’s lives,” the statement says.
In the present case, most of the affected individuals were addicts who mixed the cough syrup with some other stuff to increase its stimulation.
