Gilgit-bound flight escapes disaster

Rawalpindi: A Gilgit-bound flight of the national flag carrier — Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) — escaped narrowly from a disaster on the runway of the Benazir Bhutto International Airport (BBIA) when the tyre of PK-305 burst at about 7:30 a.m. during take-off Friday morning, airport sources told ‘The News’.

Gilgit-Baltistan Governor Pir Karam Ali Shah and other high officials were among 45 passengers and crewmembers on board, sources added.

The passengers remained unhurt and shifted to the lounge of the airport.

The PIA’s aeroplane slipped from the runway when the pilot applied emergency brakes after the tyre burst, sources said. They added that the tyre of the aeroplane caught fire, but the Fire-Fighting Unit of the Civil Aviation Authority controlled the situation and avoided disaster.
