EMR – Who Benefits Externally?

It is believed that the extent of improvement in provision of healthcare that has been experienced as a result of EMR adoption is magnificent. Although healthcare providers as well as the patients have been the sole beneficiaries of the technology, the federal government has also been benefited a lot.
"It is simple, be it any technology, there are both internal and external benefits associated to it. While the immediately associated parties enjoy the internal ones, regulatory bodies and other institutions are the ones who benefit externally. Same is the case with EMRs", says a North Carolina based health IT consultant.

Despite spending a large chunk of the federal budget, seldom were any major improvements seen in the US healthcare system. The ever increasing medical cost and the conventional pay per visit culture was effacing the true sense of quality healthcare. Furthermore, another major problem with the healthcare system was that of no clear accountability. Paper based practice not only exposed patient records and information to natural disasters but also challenged the accountability and availability of evidence on part of physicians. This is where EMR  came to rescue.

It did not take a long time for the government to realize how the implementation of EMR could help address the aforementioned problems. Already agitated by the lack of accountability, increasing healthcare costs, and excessive burden on the authorities, the government even started incentivizing physicians and other healthcare institutions on adopting the EMR and using it an appropriate way, the "Meaningful Use".
"Government takes the matter of EMR implementation seriously. This is the reason that it initiated the financial incentive programs. If the physicians help government curb the existing problems, why would not the government want to incentivize them? After all both the monetary and non-monetary costs would be mitigated if electronic medical records were used meaningfully", says a Boston based health IT consultant.

Today, various healthcare research bodies have also played an important role in improving the care conditions across the country – thanks to EMRs. Data mining techniques have been one of the many advantages that the technology has provided. Based on the availability of information related to diseases, research institutes can help find the root cause of the problem, the reason behind initiation and spread of a particular disease, and even the most common localities to have certain diseases. According to some recent reports, a group of healthcare researchers successfully found a fatal drug to drug interaction that could increase the risk of having diabetes amongst people.

"Although we cannot disregard the hardwork behind this success, the real time availability of important information could not be neglected either. EMRs are definitely doing well in the healthcare system", says a Medical Researcher.

Hence, it would not be illogical to say that EMR has helped save lives along with providing external benefits in various ways. Be it through the provision of instant quality care or through research findings. No doubt, in the next few years, the technology would have a lot more to offer.
