ISLAMABAD: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Monday reviewed preparations for the next general election and decided to carry out distribution of ballot papers under the supervision of the army.
The hot issue of non-submission of affidavits by legislators also came up for deliberations during the ECP meeting here chaired by Chief Election Commissioner Justice (retd) Fakhruddin G Ebrahim and attended by the four election commission members, secretary and additional secretary of the commission.
The forum extended the date of filing affidavits to November 30 on the request of several lawmakers. Reports said on behalf of Prime Minister Raja Pervaiz Ashraf, his affidavit on his nationality was also submitted to the Election Commission on Monday. He submitted having no dual nationality.
It is believed that several legislators, mostly belonging to the PPP and MQM hold more than one nationality and could face disqualification. It is for this reason that both these parties have been pushing for a piece of legislation to allow dual nationality holders to have representation in the legislature.
Federal Ministers Syed Khurshid Shah, Mian Maznoor Wattoo, Nazar Gondal and Makhdoom Shahabuddin are among the ministers who are yet to file their related documents to the Election Commission. Maulana Fazlur Rehman of JUI-Fazl is also among those who have so far not submitted their affidavits.
In all, as many as 88 legislators — 45 MNAs, 09 Senators, 10 members of Punjab Assembly, 19 of Sindh Assembly, four of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly and one of Balochistan Assembly — have yet to comply with the ECP letter on dual nationality.
The meeting was given a briefing on various aspects of the election arrangements and it was also decided that fool-proof arrangements would be made to protect the ballot papers. “We will protect the ballot papers like currency notes,” a senior official said.
The ECP postponed by-election in Sindh. It has already delayed the by-polls in the Punjab due to security reasons. The participants expressed satisfaction over the fact that several by-elections were held after July this year on new electoral rolls and no complaint was received regarding voters’ lists.
