Don't Be Afraid of a Healthy Smile

Author: Pediatric Dentist

Are you someone that is scared to go to the dentist, or know somebody else who is? Dental phobia or anxiety is something that affects about half of the country and around 15% of which are adults. It can manifest out of pre-existing fears or phobias related to the situation, like feeling helpless or without control. Other times it's more of a fear of the procedure, needles, or invasiveness than it is of the dentist. No matter what the fear is, it keeps an estimated 36% of American from receiving dental care, and putting themselves at risk for bigger problems along the road.

The most important thing to keep in mind if you are scared is that you are not alone. Remember, more than half of the people in the United States feel the same way as you do. The next step is to begin understanding that there is nothing to be afraid of. Dentists, like Dr. Kevin Boyd, Orthodontist Chicago, other medical doctors, want to help you not hurt you. We want you to come in for an appointment and let us know about your fears so that we can resolve them. Don't feel embarrassed to speak to the staff in the waiting room about your concerns, regardless of what they may be.

There are some people who don't feel comfortable around "men in white coats," and that's okay, because many dentists don't mind taking off the uniform if it helps ease a patient's anxiety. If the procedures are what you fear the most, it could be because you might not have a full understanding of them. Television shows and movies tend to over-exaggerate and misinterpret them, leading many with negative images of simple procedures. Please talk with your dentist at Orthodontist Chicago. We are more than willing to explain procedures in terms that you can easily understand. It's a basic instinct to fear the unknown, but our humanity pushes us forward to learn. You might find that with a better understanding of what is going on you will feel more at ease.

The field of dentistry is constantly advancing and continuing education is extremely important to all dentists too. This means that modern day dentists are more trained and equipped than they ever have been before, so you can rest assured that you are in good hands. So instead of avoiding the dentist, stop in and voice your fears. Dr. Boyd, your Orthodontist Chicago, wants to make your visit as comfortable as possible, so you can walk out the door with a healthy smile across your face.
