Court proceedings remained suspended throughout the province on Monday as the lawyers’ fraternity paid its respects to the late former federal law minister and human rights activist Syed Iqbal Haider.
Haider, former co-chairperson of the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan, had passed away on Sunday.
The Karachi Bar Association (KBA), the Malir Bar Association and the Sindh Bar Council paid tributes to Haider.
“Iqbal Haider’s death is a great loss. He was an asset to us all,” said KBA President Mehmoodul Hassan. Haider’s funeral prayer was offered at the Imambargah in DHA, Phase IV after Zuhr prayers. He was laid to rest at the Wadi-e-Hussain graveyard.
Meanwhile, a delegation of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) on Monday attended the funeral of Iqbal Haider and paid rich tributes to him for his services. The delegation included Deputy Convener Coordination Committee Dr Farooq Sattar, and members Raza Haroon, Kunwar Khalid Yunus and Dr Sagheer Ahmed.
MNA Waseem Akhtar, Khawaja Sohail Mansoor, and MPAs Sardar Ahmed, Khalid Umer, Muqeem Alam, Khalid Iftakhar, Shoaib Ibrahim, and Tahir Qureshi were also present.
MQM founder Altaf Hussain said that a bright chapter in the history of struggle for human rights had come to an end with the death of Iqbal Haider, former co-chairperson of the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan.
Talking to Hammad Haider, son of the late Iqbal Haider on the telephone, Hussain that Iqbal Haider’s life was devoted to making struggle for human rights.
“He was pertinacious and a fearless man holding steadfastly to his principles.,” he said, adding that a man of courage and strong determination had passed away and the void created by his departure would not be filled for long.
The MQM leader condoled with Hammad Haider on the death of his father and prayed to Almighty Allah to rest the departed soul in eternal peace.
