ASI killed by carjackers near Markaz G-9

Islamabad

An assistant sub-inspector (ASI) of the Margalla Police Station was killed and three others, including a cop, sustained wounds when a gang of carjackers opened gunfire on a patrolling police team as they intercepted them while stealing a car near Markaz G-9 on Friday morning, the police spokesman said.

Panic gripped the area during shooting, but some daring people cooperated with police and overpowered one of the carjackers after a long chase. People kept chasing the gunmen despite the fact that three people sustained bullet injuries due to firing by the fleeing carjackers.

However, police arrested a gunman with the help of locals while two managed to escape from the scene.

The traders of Markaz G-9, Rizwan Ahmad, Ahmad Yar and Mohammad Irshad, who chased and nabbed the gunman were wounded and shifted to the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) with multiple bullet injuries.

Police said that a vehicle of the Margalla Police Station was on routine patrol in Sector G-9 when ASI Muhammad Raiz observed some men with suspicious activities close to a Toyota Corolla car near a private hotel.

As ASI Muhammad Riaz rushed towards the car, the carjackers opened fire on him, leaving him dead as bullets pierced into his stomach. Police gunman Rizwan Mustafa sustained wounds as the car-lifters fired at him when he came close to them. The dead body and the wounded were shifted to the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS). After hearing the sound of firing, local people gathered and tried to overpower the carjackers.

During the tussle and chase, three traders sustained injuries. One of the carjackers, Iftikhar Khan, son of Dildar Khan, hailing from Parachinar, Kurram Agency, was overpowered by people. His three accomplices — Abbas, Munir Khan and Zahir Ali, all residents of Parachinar, managed to escape from the scene.

The dead body of the ASI was shifted to his native town, Chiniot, after funeral prayers. A team has been constituted to arrest the accomplices of the car-lifter.

IGP (Islamabad) Bani-Amin Khan and SSP (Islamabad) Yaseen Farooq reached the scene and collected evidence from the spot.

The funeral prayers for the departed soul of ASI Mohammad Riaz were offered at the Police Line Headquarters. Interior Minister Rehman Malik, Inspector General of Police (IGP) Bani-Amin Khan, DIG (Headquarters) Dr. Sultan Azam Temuri and other officers attended the funeral prayers.

Interior Minister Rehman Malik announced the award of ‘Sitara-e-Shujaat’ for ASI Muhammad Riaz. He said that his son and nephew would be recruited in the ICT Police as ASIs. Moreover, he announced compensation of Rs3 million from the PM’s Shaheed Fund and a plot in the Police Housing Society. He said that the services rendered by the personnel shall be remembered and family members of the martyred cops would be supported at all cost. He also announced the Pakistan Police Medal for wounded Constable Rizwan and promoted him to the rank of ASI. He also gave cash prizes to the wounded civilians for their bravery.

The interior minister informed that the culprits rented a room (No. 104) three days before at the Al-Khayyam Hotel, Markaz G-9, Islamabad. The car thieves belonged to a high-profile gang that steals cars and give these to terrorists for their nefarious activities.

Dr. Waseem Khwaja, the spokesman for the PIMS, when contacted by this correspondent, said that ASI Mohammad Riaz sustained three bullets in his abdomen, rupturing his kidney, spleen and other vital organs, causing his death due to excessive bleeding. He said that the condition of Constable Mohammad Rizwan was critical as he sustained a bullet crossing through his abdomen and ruptured his small intestine and a part of his kidney. He added that a team of surgeons — Dr. Tariq Abdullah, Dr. Shaista and Professor Tanvir Khaliq — conducted his operation and repaired his kidney and intestine.

Dr. Waseem Khwaja said that the condition of three injured civilians was out of danger. Rizwan Ahmad sustained a bullet in his left thigh, Ahmad Yar received a bullet in his right arm fracturing his bone, while Irshad sustained bullets in his legs and his bones were fractured.
