Industry in Punjab closed after power, gas suspension

LAHORE: Under the direction of the federal government, power supplies to the industry are being drastically curtailed while the gas supply to the industry was totally cut off on Sunday to facilitate domestic consumers.

In the absence of energy supplies, industry has almost been shut across the province, rendering hundreds of thousands of people jobless. Insiders claimed the simultaneous closure of power and gas supplies was for the first time. Resultantly, economic activities are feared to be badly hit in the province.

Under the latest direction of the federal ministry of water and power, the management of power distribution companies (DISCOs) has been asked to cut supplies to industry to reduce loadshedding for domestic consumers.

The policy of shifting the maximum burden of outages to the industry has lately been adopted by the government in sheer violation of an earlier arrangement of giving priority to the industry especially export-oriented units.

Moreover, the newly revised load management schedule has also been ignored by DISCOs. Under the revised plan, the industry was to get the supply for 4-12 hours daily. However, the plan has also been discarded. This bleak supply situation is expected to continue till the third week of January.

On the other hand, the gas supply to the industrial sector in Punjab has been suspended. According to the new schedule announced by Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Ltd (SNGPL), the supply to industries in Lahore, Sahiwal, Sheikhupura, Faisalabad, Sargodha, Bahawalpur, Multan, Gujranwala, Gujrat, Islamabad and Rawalpindi regions was cut off for an indefinite period.

Meanwhile, CNG stations in Lahore, Sheikhupura, Sahiwal, Multan, Gujranawala and Gujrat regions were also closed for three holidays on Monday morning till Thursday.
